Levy names federal election overseer for Massachusetts

Assistant United States Attorney Lucy Sun will be responsible for overseeing the handling of election day criminal complaints, threats of violence to election officials or staff and election fraud Tuesday after being appointed as district election officer for the District of Massachusetts.

Acting U.S. Attorney Josh Levy designated Sun, who previously worked three years as an assistant state attorney general here, for the role that involves being in touch with Department of Justice officials in Washington.

“Every citizen must be able to vote without fear, intimidation or interference and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election. Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence,” Levy said.

The public can direct complaints or concerns of election fraud, threats, intimidation and voting rights infringements on Election Day to the U.S. attorney’s office in Boston at  (833) 634-8669.

The FBI will also have special agents available in each field office throughout the country to receive allegations of election fraud and other election abuses on Election Day.

The local FBI field office can be reached by the public at (857) 386-2000. State and local police have primary jurisdiction over polling places, the feds said, and “almost always have faster reaction capacity in an emergency.”

Officials said to call 911 in the case of a crime of violence or intimidation, before contacting federal authorities.
