Election Day weather: Boston in for clear day, ‘above normal’ temperatures as voters head to the polls

Boston-area voters will see temperatures rise and fairly clear skies as they head to the polls this election day, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“Tuesday is going to be like our first warmer day this week,” said NWS forecaster Caitlyn Mensch. “We’re going to be seeing above normal temperatures; temperatures in the Boston area will rise to the mid- to upper 60s. It will actually be a little bit breezy as well in the afternoon.”

The week will start staying within the cooler, more seasonable range for fall on Monday, Mensch said, with a high in the low 50s and low in the upper 40s. Then heading into Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures are expected to become unusually warm, pushing once again toward near-record highs for this time of year.

The Boston high Tuesday is forecasted to be 69 degrees, according to NWS. On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise to 74 degrees, nearing the record high of 76 degrees set in 2022, Mensch said.

“It’ll definitely be a day to keep an eye on, for potentially seeing those well above normal temperatures, but hopefully not record territory,” Mensch said.

Highs are expected to remain in the 60s through Friday, before dropping into the 50s next weekend, according to NWS forecasts.

The Boston area, along with counties across southern New England, is also expected to fall under a high fire risk again through the week as dry conditions continue.

Special weather statements for the area have stated “prolonged period of dry weather coupled with a very dry ground will continue to result in elevated fire weather concerns,” noting relatively low humidity and risky wind conditions.

At least 100 brush fires and wildfires were reported in Massachusetts last week. With about 200 fires this October, the state has seen a 1,200% spike in the average number of fires for the month.

“Unfortunately, since we had any really big relieving rainfall in a while, we do expect to continue this special weather statement for an elevated fire concern,” said Mensch. “So expect that to continue through this week.”

There is a mild chance of rain Wednesday through midnight, but the rainfall is unlikely to be enough to ease the high fire risk conditions.

“We definitely urge people to take caution,” said Mensch. “Its definitely recommended to avoid any things like outdoor burning, or any activities that could produce a spark.”
