Jerod Mayo responds to ‘silly,’ ‘frustrating’ Patriots trade rumors

The Patriots already shipped out one player ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline (Joshua Uche) and could move more as they continue their roster rebuild.

But head coach Jerod Mayo on Sunday downplayed recent rumors involving New England defensive backs.

Mayo was asked before the Patriots’ Week 9 matchup with the Tennessee Titans about reports that safety Kyle Dugger and cornerback Jonathan Jones could be on the trade block, and that other teams have called to express interest in top corner Christian Gonzalez.

“To me, it’s silly,” Mayo told Scott Zolak during a 98.5 The Sports Hub radio interview. “A lot of those things are silly. It’s frustrating at times because you always want to be very transparent with the player and let them know; they hear it. When a report comes out that is absolutely 100% false, and you have to address it with that individual, it just takes up more time and more headspace. Everybody has to work harder – even some of these tips that everyone is getting.”

Dugger, whom the Patriots re-signed on a four-year, $58 million contract in April, did not play against Tennessee, missing his second consecutive game with an ankle injury. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on Saturday reported the team is “open to moving” the 28-year-old team captain, as well as defensive tackle Davon Godchaux and wide receivers Tyquan Thornton and Kendrick Bourne.

Thornton and wideout K.J. Osborn both were healthy scratches on Sunday.
