Cam DeLesky-led Foxboro tops North Attleboro to stay red hot

FOXBORO – With its fifth win in a row, Foxboro has set up an epic Thanksgiving showdown to defend its Hockomock Davenport division crown.

Cam DeLesky was the difference on both sides of the ball as the Warriors (5-3, 4-0) scored 19 unanswered points and escaped with a 19-14 victory over rival North Attleboro (6-2, 3-2).

Foxboro now awaits the holiday sweepstakes for the all the fixings with Davenport Division foe Mansfield, a 43-32 winner over Canton, officially eliminating the Bulldogs from league title consideration.

Penalties derailed the first series for each squadron, but DeLesky snatched an interception for Foxboro on a third-and-11 prayer down the left sideline and returned it 52 yards to the Red Rocketeers’ 28-yard line.

After another Red Rocketeers penalty handed the Warriors a first-and-10 from the 17, Ben Angelini took a sweep left to the end zone for the game’s first score at 11:03 of the second quarter.

DeLesky then turned around on offense with a crossing pattern around midfield, broke a tackle and went the rest of the way untouched for a 60-yard touchdown reception from Mike Marcucella for the 12-0 halftime lead.

The Foxboro defense – along with DeLesky – deserved all the credit with the first-half shutout limiting North Attleboro’s vaunted RPO attack to only 78 yards on the ground in their four series of the first half.

“We’ve picked off 19 passes this year and it was part of the defense that we thought needed the work, they put it in, and the proof is in the pudding,” said Foxboro head coach Jack Martinelli, who is in his 43rd season at the helm. “Cam is one of the best players in the state as far as I’m concerned. He makes plays that you can’t practice, he is an excellent football player.”

Angelini was bottled up in the defensive battle for most of the game as the senior captain finished with 113 yards on a tough 25 carries but picked up his second touchdown of the night to close out the third quarter and Foxboro had what appeared to be a comfortable 19-0 lead.

But North Attleboro came alive in the fourth quarter and made a game of it on its first series of the final stanza as Ryan Bannon picked up 56 of his game-high 151 yards on the first play from scrimmage to get the Red Rocketeers down to the Warriors’ 9. Four plays later Bannon went in from two yards out and the shutout was erased, 19-7 at 10:30 of the fourth.

With only 4:47 left to play, more Red Rocketeer magic as Chase Frisoli found Bryce Kiser over the top on a fade route in the right corner of the end zone and Foxboro was on the ropes.

North Attleboro burned its timeouts and forced the Warriors to punt with 1:26 left but the Foxboro defense turned the burners back on and swarmed Frisoli into his second interception of the game as Joe Sacchetti sealed the win for Foxboro with turnover with less than a minute remaining.

“Bottom line, they made more plays in the first half then we did but we knew going in (Foxboro) were a great football team, Angelini is a dude, and they are good up front, and we made a couple of mistakes we shouldn’t have made,” said North Attleboro head coach Mike Strachan. “Uncharacteristic for us, but a great football game. We executed a little better in the second half, we have to play our best football here, and we left a little bit out there.”

After an 0-3 start to the season, Foxboro now clinched at least a share of the Hockomock Davenport Division title and has a chance to not only defend its division title but is set up to return to Gillette Stadium as the defending Division 5 Super Bowl champion.

“Our nonleague schedule was very tough, and we didn’t have Ben for the first two scrimmages and the first two games, and he makes a big difference,” said Martinelli. “Right now, I’m happy we did it the way we did. I never ask kids what their goals are till the end of the year and by then I already know what they are, so I guess going back to the playoffs was their goal and mine from the get-go.”
