Jerod Mayo: Jacoby Brissett remains Patriots’ starting QB ‘at this point’

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — You can say this for Jacoby Brissett: at least this time his coach didn’t say “I don’t know.”

Asked whether he would consider making a change at quarterback after the Patriots’ 30-13 loss at San Francisco, Jerod Mayo reiterated Brissett is the team’s starter.

“At this point, Jacoby is our starting quarterback,” Mayo said. “I haven’t watched any film or anything like that. He’s been a great leader. He just broke the huddle down after I talked to the guys and we’ve gotta watch the film. We’ve got a long flight to go back to watch the film and we’re always evaluating every single position.”

Brissett went 19-of-32 for 168 yards, one touchdown and an interception in defeat. He also fumbled three times on six sacks and lost the ball once. Brissett sat in favor of first-round rookie Drake Maye at the end of the Patriots’ 24-3 loss to the Jets in Week 3, but played every snap Sunday.

Mayo lauded his toughness, as the Patriots’ offensive line yielded 10 more quarterback hits, meeting their game average this season.

“What I will say about Jacoby is that he’s tough, both mentally and physically,” Mayo said. “I mean this guy’s going out there, he’s taking some huge shots and continues to get back up. Sometimes you’re like, ‘Man, is he OK?’ watching him for a while. But he is a tough guy. I would never use the word ‘skittish’ with a guy like that.”

Asked about the punishment he’s taken this season, Brissett told reporters: “Just keep getting up. It’s all I can do. It’s all I can keep doing.”
