Ticker: Boeing furloughs salaried staff; Tupperware files bankruptcy

Boeing Co. is requiring many salaried workers to take unpaid leave to preserve cash as the planemaker digs in for contentious contract talks with its largest union.

The austerity measure affects tens of thousands of US-based employees, managers and executives, according to the company. They will work a rolling schedule of three weeks on the job and one week without work or pay, Kelly Ortberg, Boeing’s chief executive officer, announced Wednesday in a companywide message seen by Bloomberg. Ortberg and other senior executives will also take a pay cut while factory workers in Seattle and Oregon remain on strike, he said.

“With production paused across many key programs in the Pacific Northwest, our business faces substantial challenges and it is important that we take difficult steps to preserve cash and ensure that Boeing is able to successfully recover,” Ortberg said.

Tupperware files bankruptcy

Tupperware Brands, the company that revolutionized food storage decades ago, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Orlando, Florida-based Tupperware plans to continue operating during the bankruptcy proceedings and will seek court approval for a sale, “in order to protect its iconic brand,” the company said just before midnight on Tuesday.

The company is seeking bankruptcy protection amid growing struggles to revitalize its business.

In Tuesday’s bankruptcy petition, Tupperware reported more than $1.2 billion in total debts and $679.5 million in total assets. Shares for the company have fallen 75% this year and closed Tuesday at about 50 cents apiece.

“The reality is that the decline at Tupperware is not new,” Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, said Wednesday. “It is very difficult to see how the brand can get back to its glory days.”
