Former Red Sox first-round pick called up by Pirates

Former Red Sox first-round pick Nick Yorke is being called up to the majors by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced Monday afternoon.

Yorke’s promotion was first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Originally selected No. 17 overall in the 2020 MLB Draft, Yorke was dealt to the Pirates ahead of this summer’s trade deadline in exchange for right-hander Quinn Priester, himself a former first-round pick.

Though well regarded by evaluators, Yorke’s path to the majors in Boston was blocked by the organization’s plethora of other standout middle infielders, including Trevor Story, Marcelo Mayer and Vaughn Grissom, among others. This season Yorke started getting more playing time in the outfield, and by early June he earned a promotion to Triple-A.

Yorke has enjoyed a strong showing since he got to Triple-A, both in Worcester and with the Pirates’ affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians. Over 38 games in Worcester Yorke batted .310 with six home runs and 19 RBI, and in 40 games since the trade he’s batted .355 with two homers and 26 RBI.

Overall Yorke is batting .303 with 12 home runs, 72 RBI, 21 stolen bases and an .834 OPS across all levels in 2024. He ranked as Pittsburgh’s No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline at the time of his promotion.

Heineman claimed off waivers

The Red Sox announced Monday that catcher Tyler Heineman has been claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Heineman, who has spent most of 2024 at Triple-A Worcester, was designated for assignment over the weekend to clear space on the 40-man roster for left-hander Zach Penrod. Heineman appeared in two big league games with Boston and otherwise batted .253 with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 52 minor league games, 51 with Worcester and one at Double-A Portland.

This will be Heineman’s third big league stint with the Blue Jays, with whom he also played for parts of 2022 and 2023. Overall the 33-year-old has played 106 MLB games over five seasons in the majors.
