Celtics reportedly make their first free agent signing of offseason
It took more than two months, but the Celtics finally added a veteran newcomer to their championship-winning roster.
Boston on Wednesday agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent wing Lonnie Walker IV, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the agreement.
Walker’s deal is an Exhibit 10 contract, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, which is nonguaranteed, worth the veteran minimum and gives the player a bonus if he is cut out of training camp and spends time with Boston’s G League affiliate in Maine.
So, he’ll need to earn his spot with the Celtics to stick around beyond the preseason.
Walker, 25, is entering his seventh NBA season. He’s started 322 career games with 88 starts across stints with the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. Last season, Walker appeared in 58 games off the bench for Brooklyn, averaging 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 42.3% from the field and 38.4% from three.

Drafted 18th overall out of Miami in 2018, the 6-foot-4 Walker spent his first four seasons with San Antonio, where he overlapped with Celtics guard Derrick White. He’s played well against the C’s in his career, making half of his 3-pointers across 12 meetings and posting a better field-goal percentage (58.8%), true shooting percentage (69.4%) and offensive rating (127) than he has against any other opponent.
With Boston’s starting five set, Walker will join a group of Celtics reserves that remains almost entirely intact from last season.
Al Horford, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, Xavier Tillman, Neemias Queta, Jordan Walsh and Jaden Springer all return, with JD Davison and Drew Peterson also re-signing on two-way contracts to compete for spots. The only departures were forward Oshae Brissett, who remained a free agent as of Wednesday night, and guard Svi Mykhailiuk, who signed with Utah.
Brissett and Mykhailiuk ranked 12th and 13th on the team in minutes per game last season, respectively, and played sparingly in the playoffs. Walker fills the final open spot on Boston’s 15-man roster with first-round rookie Baylor Scheierman filling the other vacancy. Second-round pick Anton Watson signed a two-way deal.
The Celtics are scheduled to begin training camp in late September and the preseason in early October, with their regular-season opener set for Oct. 22 against the New York Knicks at TD Garden.
