Twins make room on active roster for reliever Michael Tonkin
Michael Tonkin appears ready to join the Twins before this evening’s series finale against Atlanta at Target Field, a day after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees.
The Twins made room for the veteran right-hander by optioning pitcher Caleb Boushley back to Class AAA St. Paul on Wednesday morning.
Tonkin, 34, appeared in 39 games for the Yankees this season, going 3-2 with a 3.38 earned-run average. He walked 21 and struck out 57, and held opponents to a .214 batting average over 56 innings.
In seven appearances this month, Tonkin allowed nine earned runs on 17 hits and three walks while fanning 13 in 12⅓ innings. The Yankees designated him for assignment or release on Monday.
Tonkin last pitched on Saturday, giving up two earned runs on two hits and a walk in 1⅔ innings of a 6-2 loss to Colorado. He has appeared in one playoff game, throwing two-thirds of an inning for Atlanta in the 2023 NLDS.
Boushley pitched two scoreless innings of relief Tuesday, allowing three hits and one walk in an 8-6, 10-inning loss to the Braves. The Twins have lost 7 of 9 and fallen into third place in the American League Central, 2½ games behind first-place Cleveland and Kansas City.
