Angels calling up former Red Sox top prospect for MLB debut (report)
One of the top prospects traded by the Red Sox at this summer’s deadline is reportedly getting the call.
According to sportscaster Chuck Freeby, the Los Angeles Angels are expected to add infielder Niko Kavadas to their active roster on Friday. A team source confirmed the move to the Herald.
Currently ranked No. 30 in the Angels’ system, Kavadas was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 11th round of the 2021 draft. A standout at Notre Dame, he was promoted to Triple-A Worcester in 2023. Kavadas, 25, was hitting .281/.424/.551 with 20 doubles and 17 home runs over 83 games for the WooSox this season when the Red Sox dealt him, outfielder Matthew Lugo, and right-handers Ryan Zeferjahn and Yeferson Vargas to the Angels for veteran reliever Luis García.
Kavadas is one of several prospects the Red Sox traded at the deadline before they could become eligible for this winter’s Rule 5 Draft.
After posting a 3.71 ERA across 45 Angels appearances this season, García has struggled since the trade. Over six outings totaling 6.2 innings, he’s allowed nine earned runs, one unearned on 12 hits, including three home runs.
