Zebby Matthews, Saints lose 5-1 in Iowa to Cubs
Highly touted prospect Zebby Matthews had a tough start for the St. Paul Saints to Friday’s game in Iowa.
Matthews, making his third Triple-A start, hit Iowa’s Gilberto Celestino in the helmet with a pitch to load the bases in the first inning. Celestino left the game and Matthews couldn’t recover. After getting one out, the right-hander surrendered a grand slam and five total runs in the inning. It was all the Cubs needed.
Matthews (1-2) allowed five runs on nine hits as the Saints lost 5-1 on Friday. Matthews struck out eight, but one of the Minnesota Twins’ top pitching prospects owns a 7.07 ERA for St. Paul.
Meanwhile, three Cubs pitchers held the Saints to just four hits, including Caleb Kilian throwing four no-hit innings in his start for Iowa.
St. Paul’s lone run came in the sixth. Edouard Julien had an infield groundout with two runners on that plated DaShawn Keirsey Jr. Julien was on base twice with a single and walk. Keirsey had the lone extra-base hit for the Saints with a double before Julien’s groundout.
