Fired up Biden addresses Philadelphia church as party’s post-debate jitters linger

President Joe Biden attempts to recover from his self-inflicted political wounds are being met with a growing number of voices from his side of the aisle calling on the elder stateman to step aside and make way for a younger Democratic presidential nominee.

Citing anonymous sources, The Hill is saying four “senior House Democrats,” during a private call held on Sunday, called for the president to make way for another contender.

New York Reps. Jerry Nadler and Joe Morelle, as well as California Rep. Mark Takano and Washington’s Adam Smith, apparently expressed concern about Biden’s ability to take on Trump in November’s general election after his disastrous debate performance at the end of June.

“They were part of the general sentiment that we need to do something else,” one of the sources reportedly told The Hill.

Another California Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff, one of his party’s key figures during Trump’s impeachment proceedings, told NBC Sunday that both Trump and Biden should have cognitive tests, but that if Biden is going to bow out, it’s best if he does “everything in his power to make that other candidate successful.”

The group join a chorus of pundits and politicians form across the political spectrum, who say it’s time for Biden to read the room.

Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton said on Wednesday, before the July 4th holiday, that “winning will require prosecuting the case in the media, in town halls, and at campaign stops all over the country. President Biden needs to demonstrate that he can do that. The unfortunate reality is that the status quo will likely deliver us President Trump.”

Even Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, long considered a “campaign surrogate,” came out with a statement late last week asking Biden “to listen to the American people and carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump.”

The calls come as Biden hit the campaign trail over the weekend.

On Sunday morning, an energized Biden  joined with the congregation of Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ in standing and singing to the music of the choir.

Biden raised his hands in the air and clapped, shouting “Amen!” where appropriate. He then took to the pulpit, his voice strong and clear, and forcefully delivered a message of brotherly love, hope, and optimism, telling the audience there is nothing the country can’t accomplish if it stands together against hate.

Biden told churchgoers he used to start his Sundays with Catholic mass, and then head to Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Delaware. This Sunday wasn’t terribly different, Biden said, and it felt like “coming home.”

“I’ve always felt the power of your faith, in good times, and in tough times,” the President said.

Biden’s remarks were brief, lasting less than ten minutes, but simultaneously rousing and demonstrative of his lifelong Catholic faith.

“The fact is, the scripture says, ‘all things work together for good.’ To those who love God, and who are called according to His purpose: our purpose is to serve others. That’s our purpose. To know everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect, to know that faith without works is dead,” Biden said.

The Church’s senior pastor, Bishop Louis Felton, said that “we love our president” while leading a prayer, and called for congregants to stand beside the Democratic nominee despite his singularly poor performance at the debate. He told a story about a child lost in a blizzard, and people rushing about alone to find them and only later deciding — too late — to link arms and form a human chain.

“If we had only locked arms sooner,” he said.

He instructed the faithful to link their arms then, and warned them not to let anyone come between them.

“Let’s start a rumor: we are together. Look at someone next to you and say ‘we’re together.’ Say it again, ‘we’re together,’” he said.

“The enemy has tried for so long to divide us. He has used superficial disagreements — things that don’t even matter — just to keep us at each other’s throats,” Felton said.

Felton turned to Biden at one point, and gave him some advice on what is proving to be his largest political liability, reminding him that he was sitting next to Bishop Ernest Morris Sr., who founded the church 58 years ago.

“We want you to know, President Biden, that Bishop Morris is 91 years old, on his way to 92. And so, Mr. President, since you are only an octogenarian sitting next to a nonagenarian, don’t let anyone talk about your age,” Felton said.

“You are a young whippersnapper,” he added.

The President’s visit to Philadelphia, followed by a trip to Harrisburg, comes after a long week of post-debate blowback and campaign damage control.

A steady stream of polls have been rolling out and show support for Biden’ reelection slipping, especially among the key swing states like Pennsylvania.

A series of surveys released on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week all showed that former President Trump — twice impeached, 34-time felony convicted, and with dozens more state and federal charges levied against him — is gaining ground on Biden, where before the pair of presidents had slid into and stayed in a dead heat for months.

“The poll offers early empirical evidence of what many Democrats have feared: That Mr. Biden’s faltering debate performance has further imperiled his chances against Mr. Trump this fall,” the New York Times wrote of their survey.

An average of polls maintained by RealClearPolitics shows the pair nearly tied before the debate at 45 points each, with Trump less than a point ahead. Since then, Trump, who promised to only be a dictator for his first day should he return to office, has jumped to a clear more-than-3% lead.

The next debate is scheduled for September 10.
