Division 5 state track: North Reading stars lead the way
BRIDGEWATER — North Reading’s Giuliana Ligor and Hayden MacLellan put on epic performances, winning two individual events apiece during the course of the weekend, as North Reading captured its second straight Div. 5 girls outdoor track and field championship Sunday at Bridgewater State University.
“Incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished,” said North Reading track coach Sotirios Pintzopoulos. “These girls are ending their season with the quote: ‘perfect season.’ They were undefeated in the league, they won the relays, they won their league championship, and now here they are, state champions for a second straight year, back-to-back.”
The Hornets staked a big lead in the rankings early Friday night, then just built upon things come Sunday afternoon by finishing with 94 team points. Ligor shattered two meet records during the two-day competition by winning the girls’ 400-meter hurdles (1:01.15) and the 400-meter dash (55.79 seconds). MacLellan was first in the pole vault (9-06 feet), and then capped things with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles (15.49 seconds).
“Hayden and I have been competing since freshman year together,” Ligor said. “We’ve been working hard everyday at practice, and we have our events that we’re great at. I’m just very proud of the both of us, and I’m excited to see what we do next.”
Meanwhile, Weston rallied in the standings to win the Div. 5 boys outdoor track and field title, finishing with 89.5 points as a collective unit. The Wildcats relied heavily on their depth to capture the crown. Ben Tavares played a crucial role in the squad’s two first place finishes of the meet by winning the 800-meter run (1:58.87) Friday. He also anchored Weston’s 4×800 relay team to a victory (3:24.95), working with Nicolas Barbieri, Austin Cranmore and Matthew Stick to do so.
However, Weston was able to accumulate a large sum of points through the field events. Most notably, the Wildcats witnessed four of their athletes place in the top-10 of the pole vault competition. Chelian Subbiah finished second (11-06 feet), while Lucas Scully-Power (11 feet) came in fourth. Caleb Graupera (10-06 feet) tied and Jacob Inbar (10-06) rounded out the leaders in the event for Weston, which became a beneficiary of a 16-point swing in the standings as a result.
It was the first title for the program since 2018.
“It’s a great reward for these kids,” said Weston track coach John Monz. “They worked hard all season. We were runner-up in cross country in states, we were third indoors. So now, to get over the hump? It’s nice.”
Other noteworthy performances from the Div. 5 championships over the weekend included Winthrop’s Nicholas Cappuccio, who placed first in the boys’ 200-meter dash on Friday (22.63 seconds). He followed things up by winning two more events – the 100 (11.21 seconds) and the long jump (21-10.50 feet) – on Sunday afternoon.
Norwell’s Liliana MacDonald turned in her latest career performance with three wins, including a first place finish in the girls’ pentathlon Friday (2,952 points). The URI commit also set a meet record in the triple jump (38-06.50 feet) and placed first in the long jump (17-06.25 feet) as things progressed.
Norton had two athletes stand out in the track events with Bryant commit Andrew McConnell winning the boys’ two-mile (9:32.34) on Friday, and the mile event (4:22.28), the latter of which turning out to be a meet record. He also combined with teammates Jacob Ollerhead, Cameron Johnson and Sean Parham to win the 4×800 relay (8:14.12). Meanwhile, the Lancers saw Jillian Strynar follow in similar fashion with a victory in the girls’ 200 (25.57 seconds) on day one, and a win later to finish as a repeat champion in the 100 (12.79 seconds).
Julius Lowe-Wannamaker of Springfield High School of Science set a new meet record in the boys’ high jump (6-04 feet).
