Maine man released after speeding over 120 mph, initiating police pursuit in New Hampshire
A 28-year-old Maine man who was clocked speeding over 120 miles per hour, initiating a wild police pursuit over the New Hampshire border, has been released on personal recognizance.
Bert E. Clement, of South Portland, Maine, fled from Epping Police officers at a “high rate of speed” along Route 101 eastbound in Epping around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, sparking New Hampshire State Police to pursue.
Clement, who authorities say was driving a silver 2005 Honda Accord over 120 miles per hour at one point, led troopers onto I-95 northbound before eventually stopping at a toll plaza in North Hampton, where officers took him into custody on charges of reckless conduct and driving under the influence.
A bail commissioner set personal recognizance bail and released Clement to a “responsible party,” pending a June 4 arraignment.
Shortly after fleeing from Epping Police, a state trooper spotted a driver in a Honda Accord, later identified as Clement, “traveling at a speed greater than 120 mph along Route 101 eastbound near Exit 10 in Exeter,” according to New Hampshire State Police.
Clement ignored the state trooper attempting to “initiate a traffic stop” and continued along Route 101 before briefly getting off the highway and then returning to the thoroughfare in Hampton.
“Approximately three minutes after the initial pursuit began, additional Troopers were able to deploy tire deflation devices along Route 101 eastbound in the vicinity of the junction with Interstate 95, successfully deflating two tires on the fleeing Honda,” New Hampshire State Police stated in a release. “Despite the Honda having two deflated tires, the pursuit continued through the Hampton Side Toll Plaza and onto I-95 North in North Hampton, where the Honda eventually stopped.”
Clement showed signs of “impairment” as police investigated the scene. His charges include reckless conduct – deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of drugs, driving under the influence of drugs, disobeying an officer and reckless operation.
Epping Police also charged Clement in connection with that agency’s initial pursuit.
Clement will be arraigned June 4 in the 10th Circuit Court – District Division – Brentwood.
