WZLX morning show shakeup: Pete McKenzie, Heather Ford are out; ‘new show’ will debut soon

It was a rude awakening for WZLX loyal listeners on Monday, as they learned that the longtime morning show was no more.

Boston’s classic rock station announced that beloved morning hosts Pete McKenzie and Heather Ford are out.

This shakeup at 100.7 WZLX, an iHeartRadio station, comes several months after morning show co-host Kevin Karlson died unexpectedly.

“On behalf of everyone here at WZLX, we’d like to share some news about the future of Boston’s Classic Rock,” the station said in an on-air message.

“First and foremost, we’d like to thank Pete McKenzie and Heather Ford for all the laughter, wild stories, and fun moments they have brought to Boston morning radio over the years,” the message continued. “We truly appreciate them. With that said, we have decided to close that chapter of WZLX.”

The station said it will be launching a new show soon.

“After careful consideration, it was our decision to bring you, the loyal WZLX listener, a new show to take us into the future,” the station’s message stated. “We will debut this new show soon. Stay tuned to WZLX for more details today.”

The Herald reached out to the station about the shakeup, but did not immediately hear back on Monday.

Following the show’s announcement, social media lit up with listeners upset about the shakeup.

“What the hell @WZLX? Really? You drop @petemckenziezlx and @wzlxnewsgirl with a lame 06:00 PSA?” a social media user posted. “Uncool and @iHeartRadio sux!”

“Damn @wzlx my morning commutes are gonna suck now,” someone else wrote. “@KennyYoungZLX was a GREAT fill in and hopefully the permanent fixture for the morning show. Then y’all drop a bomb at 6am that the morning show is scraped. Very disappointed.”

“@wzlx are you guys serious? not funny,” another person posted. “incredibly disappointed with you getting rid of pete and heather and doing it so unceremoniously.”
