MSTCA Freshman Sophomore track: Lincoln-Sudbury’s Nico Begic triples his fun

WEYMOUTH – Lincoln-Sudbury sophomore Nico Begic competed in three events on Saturday with eyes on first-place finishes for each, and that’s exactly what he got in a star performance in the MSTCA Jim Hoar Freshman Sophomore Invitational at Weymouth High School.

By taking the 200-meter dash (21.88) and 400-meter run (50.35), before contributing toward a crown in the 4×100 relay (44.36), Begic was the lone triple-winner in a meet filled with signature performances.

For Begic, it’s just another big step toward his high aspirations.

“I’m extremely grateful for how this meet went and where I ended up,” he said. “I wanted to do my best here, but I’m looking ahead, always. … I want to get the best out me I possibly can this season. Even though I’m only a sophomore, I don’t think that’s any excuse not to go 100 percent, see how far I can go.”

Hopedale’s Ari Levine took gold in the boys discus throw (150-07) and shot put (52-09.00), as well as a second-place finish in the javelin throw (144-01).

“I’m really happy,” Levine said. “I’ve had a bunch of rough meets leading up to this – hadn’t broke 50 (in the shot put) in like three weeks, haven’t thrown 150 in disc ever. So I was really excited when I was able to throw that today. … I’ve been working on my form a lot in the throwing, so I knew I could do it. It was just a matter of which meet.”

Sharon’s big day was split between boys and girls. Sophomore Tobiah Stessman won the boys triple jump (40-05.25) by 3.25 inches over Littleton sophomore Brian Michaels, who took the high jump (6-02.00). Stessman also finished second in the long jump (19-10.50).

Eagles sophomore Nina Kyei-Aboagye did him one better with a double-win in the girls 100-meter dash (12.27) and 200-meter dash (25.13).

“I’m pretty happy about my 25.13 and my 12.27 because last season, I never got under 12.50 (seconds),” said Kyei-Aboagye. “I was really hoping (for first places), but I think my overall times, I feel like they matter more than the place. … I was really just racing the clock today.”

Newton South’s Emily Frawley was another girls double winner, taking the 800-meter run (2:19.63) and the 4×800 relay (10:16.93). Nauset’s Violet Roche came close, winning the girls high jump (5-00.00) while taking second-place in the triple jump (34-07.25) and 400-meter run (1:01.08).

“She’s a really, really, very determined, very focused athlete,” said Nauset head coach Moira Nobili. “She’s a great kid.”

Lexington had wide-spread success. Ainsley Cuthbertson won the girls discus throw (88-06) ahead of teammate Ella Wolosoff (87-06), and Aubrey Deardorf won the girls long jump (17-07.00). Cuthbertson also took second in the shot put (36-06.50), Deardorf finished third in the 100-meter dash (12.94) and 4×100 relay (51.51), and Simon Tandeih secured first and third-place marks in the boys 110-meter hurdles (14.75) and 200-meter dash (22.64), respectively.

The Newton North girls 4×100 relay team set a meet record (50.76), which sophomore Brooke Bennett contributed toward after finishing second in the 200-meter dash (26.13). Teammate Blake MacNeal starred atop the girls triple jump (34-09.00) alongside a second-place mark in the long jump (16-11.00).

Natick’s Emmanuela Edozien set a meet record in the girls 100-meter hurdles (14.71) and took second in the 100-meter dash (12.32). RedHawks sophomore John Bianchi also set a meet record in the boys one mile run (4:25.32) and added to a meet record in the 4×800 relay (8:36.00) as another double-winner.
