Hours after signing, Dominic Smith helps lead Red Sox past Giants 6-2

Dominic Smith has been a big leaguer for seven years, but he probably hasn’t had many days as memorable as this.

After opting out of his minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, the 28-year-old first baseman signed with the Red Sox and immediately hustled up to Boston. Smith arrived shortly before first pitch, and in the blink of an eye he was in uniform, batting seventh and starting at first for the Red Sox.

The newcomer didn’t need long to make an impact either.

Smith went 1 for 4 with an RBI single in Boston’s 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants, which clinched the series and moved the Red Sox to within 1.5 games of the AL East lead. The Red Sox got contributions from up and down the lineup, including stellar showings from Jarren Duran and Connor Wong, and Kutter Crawford allowed two runs over a career-high seven innings to continue his outstanding start to the season.

Despite cool 51 degree temperatures at first pitch, the ball carried well throughout the night, especially on balls hit to left field. Hitters repeatedly peppered the Green Monster, starting with Giants catcher Tom Murphy’s solo shot in the top of the third and Rafael Devers’ sky high fly ball that barely scraped the wall for an RBI double in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 1-1.

From there Rob Refsnyder gave Boston the lead with an RBI groundout and the Giants tied the score out a perfectly executed bunt single by Mike Yastrzemski in the top of the fourth, but after that the Red Sox got going and took control.

Boston scored twice in the fourth after ripping off three extra-base hits in quick succession, including a leadoff double by Connor Wong, an RBI double by Enmanuel Valdez and finally a stand-up RBI triple down the right field line by Duran. Smith added his RBI single in the fifth and Wong an RBI double in the seventh, and that was more than enough for Crawford, who allowed just the two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Crawford now boasts a 1.56 ERA for the season through seven starts.

Wong finished 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, and with his performance he’s now batting .366 with a 1.007 OPS on the season.

Duran is also scorching hot. Entering the game the dynamic leadoff hitter was 6 for his last 13 (.462), and through the first two games against the Giants he has now reached base in seven of 10 plate appearances. He finished Wednesday 1 for 3 with the RBI triple, two walks and a run scored.

With the win Boston is now 18-13 on the season and has quickly gained separation in the AL East standings from the Toronto Blue Jays (15-17) and Tampa Bay Rays (14-18), both of whom lost on Wednesday. The Red Sox have won four straight and eight of their last 11 overall.

Boston now has a chance to go for the sweep Thursday, with Josh Winckowski (1-1, 3.50 ERA) scheduled to take the hill against San Francisco’s Kyle Harrison (2-1, 4.09). First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

J-Rod outrighted to WooSox

Left-hander Joely Rodriguez, who was designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier this week, will remain with the organization after all. The club announced Wednesday that Rodriguez cleared waivers and had been outrighted to Triple-A Worcester.
