Steve Belichick provides update on Bill Belichick after Patriots departure

There’s only one Belichick left with the Patriots as Bill Belichick takes a year off from coaching and Steve Belichick serves as defensive coordinator of the University of Washington.

That leaves the youngest Belichick, Brian, maintaining his post as safeties coach under new head coach Jerod Mayo.

Steve Belichick appeared on former Patriots defensive end Chris Long’s “Green Light” podcast and provided an update on his dad, who interviewed with the Falcons and reportedly had conversations with the Commanders but was left without a head coaching gig after leaving the Patriots.

“I think he’s good. Let this stuff roll off your back and move forward,” Steve Belichick said on the show. “He doesn’t dwell unless we lost a game and he needs to get on some guys, but mentally you’ve got to turn the page.

“Honestly, I wasn’t too involved in any of that stuff. He did his thing, I did my thing, and that was kind of that. But he’s definitely pursuing some other stuff, whether it’s TV…”

Steve Belichick was asked what kind of hobbies his dad might take up with a year out of football. It sounds like Bill Belichick won’t stray too far from the game.

“I would say his hobbies would still be to, let’s say, critique football. He was excited when I came out here, because he got to evaluate the scheme last year, evaluate the players last year,” Steve Belichick said. “I’m sure he’ll come out here at some point to do stuff. The guy just loves football. Definitely that element.

“He does — obviously in Nantucket whether it’s swimming, paddleboarding, biking all type of stuff on the island. He does all of that stuff. Maybe have a couple cocktails, I don’t know.”

Steve Belichick did say his father is a good houseguest, which is good news for Bill Belichick’s future trips out to Seattle. Steve Belichick also said he had an opportunity to stay with the Patriots before the opportunity arose with the Huskies.

“There was a couple things going on whether it was staying in New England or bounce around a little bit,” Belichick said. “But I worked with Jedd Fisch, the head coach here. He was (with the Patriots) in 2020 coaching the quarterbacks. Kind of got to know each other, and then he left and went to Arizona. We kept in touch and he gave me the opportunity. I’m running with it.”

Steve Belichick and Mayo served as co-linebackers coaches from 2020 to 2023 and shared defensive coordinator duties over the last four seasons. They share a close bond, which started when Belichick was a lower-level assistant and Mayo spent some stints on the injured reserve list late in his career.

Belichick has high hopes for his dad’s replacement.

“We became so close these last few years and I’m super excited for Jerod,” he said. “I think he’s ready for this. I think it was his time.

“He’s a great motivator and he’s a great teacher. Those are two good qualities for a head coach.”

Mayo elevated DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator. Former Patriot Dont’a Hightower and Drew Wilkins are now serving as inside and outside linebackers coaches, respectively.
