Ski Wednesday: Saddleback signpost

WHERE: Located in the lakes region of Maine, Rangeley is about four hours north of Boston proper.

WHEN: Saddleback’s season runs long, thanks to its northern locale. The snow holds strong through their usually closing date in mid April.

Midweek is a gem not just for less crowds but for deals. A two-day midweek adult lift ticket comes in a $90 total, purchased online. They have lodging deals too, including discounted stays at their slopeside lodging.

LAY YOUR HEAD: Saddleback lodging is somewhat limited, so plan ahead. Slopeside, you’ll find condos and the lovely new A-Frames that are unique and fun.

Down in Rangeley proper (a tiny hamlet that’s packed with fun), consider the Rangeley Inn (https://www.therangeleyinn.com), a beautifully renovated Inn in the grand hotel style; just a 10 minute drive to and from skiing.

EXTRAS: There’s an active ski and ride school and any rentals you may need on site. Book ahead to make it easy.

DON’T MISS: Dining at The Nest, Saddleback’s newest mountain top dining spot. Built by an anonymous donor (who doesn’t even ski!), The Nest is bright, open and unique with post-modern touches like mustard colored beams (trust it! You’ll see!) conversation pits, outdoor fire pits and creative, delicious food like the hand held meat pies Chef Coco Chretien creates from her childhood memories. It’s totally where James Bond would head for a break. Sure to be the must-visit spot this season.

The Pub, upstairs in the base lodge, serves top notch food that’s far from base lodge ordinary. Try the lobster stew, scallops or their to-die-for burgers. The cocktails – and service – is great there day or night.

DOWN THE ROAD: Just six miles down the road sits the hamlet of Rangeley where you’ll find a whole lot of wow packed into a tiny town center. Cocktails and small bites at the Corner Bar and Kitchen (https://www.cornerbarandkitchen.net) – try their deviled egg of the day; dinner at the warm, spacious dining room of the Rangeley Inn & Tavern, or the local vibe of Sarges Sports Pub (https://sargessportspub.com) where they pack a crowd even on a Tuesday.

IndyPass: Saddleback is on the Indy Ski Pass (https://www.indyskipass.com) with no blackouts, so if planning a trip next season is in your heart, consider purchasing that pass. (They sell out quickly).
