Red Sox acquire veteran catcher from New York Mets
The Red Sox added some additional depth behind catchers Connor Wong and Reese McGuire on Friday, acquiring Tyler Heineman from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.
To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox also designed right-hander Max Castillo for assignment.
Heineman appeared in 22 big league games last season while splitting time between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays, and also played in 42 games at Triple-A. The 32-year old batted .237 with an .383 on-base percentage in the majors in 2023, and overall he’s batted .218 in 104 MLB games over four seasons.
Heineman is the latest catcher the Red Sox have brought in to shore up their organizational depth at the position, which became an issue late last year after McGuire went on the injured list. The Red Sox have also added veterans Roberto Perez and Mark Kolozsvary, and while Heineman has minor league options and can be moved back and forth between the majors and Triple-A, he will be on the 40-man roster, making him the first man up if either Wong or McGuire go down due to injury.
Previously Boston’s top catching options in the upper minors were Jorge Alfaro and Ronaldo Hernandez, who were both bat-first catchers with limited defensive acumen, and Caleb Hamilton, who earned solid marks defensively but who didn’t have the same offensive upside. All three of those players are now with different organizations, with Hamilton inking a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels earlier this week.
