New Year’s Day hikes offer a chance to start 2024 in motion

If you are among the millions of Americans who will resolve themselves to losing some weight or just being more active with the coming of the New Year, then the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation has a plan to get you started on day one.

As they have every year for three decades now, DCR will host several New Year’s Day hikes at state properties across the Commonwealth. The hikes are generally guided, free to join, and many come with hot cocoa at the end.

“First Day Hikes brings people of all ages, backgrounds, and demographics together with a common goal of starting their year off at our state parks,” Gov. Maura Healey said in her announcement of the event’s 33rd year.

“We are proud to continue this cherished tradition that encourages communities to come together, take in fresh air, and experience the beauty of our state,” she said.

First started at Blue Hills Reservation by a group of about 400 hikers in 1992, the annual New Year’s Day outdoors program has expanded into a national effort. According to the governor’s office, there are now similar offerings in all 50 states.

Hikes will be offered at:

Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park, Uxbridge, 10 a.m., 2-mile hike. Meet at the River Bend Farm Visitor Center for registration at 9 a.m.

Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, 12 p.m., two guided hikes and one self-guided hike. Gather at Houghton’s Pond Recreation Area at 11 a.m. Parking and space are limited.

Breakheart Reservation, Saugus, 10 a.m., 2- or 3-mile hike. Meet at the Christopher P. Dunne Visitor Center.

Chester Blandford State Forest, Chester, 10 a.m., 2-mile hike. Meet at Sanderson Brook Falls Parking Lot.

Dunn State Park, Gardner, 10 a.m., 1.5-mile hike. Meet at the Pond House for registration at 9 a.m.

Great Falls Discovery Center, Turner Falls, 1 p.m., 3-mile hike. Meet at the Great Hall.

Halibut Point State Park, Rockport, 10 a.m., 3-mile hike. Meet in parking lot at 9 a.m.

Middlesex Fells Reservation, Stoneham, 10 a.m., 1.5- or 3-mile hikes and bike rides. Meet at the Botume House for hikes and the Marjam Lot for the bike ride.

Mount Greylock State Reservation, Lanesborough, 10 a.m., 2-mile hike. Open House followed up with a self-guided hike.

Wachusett Reservoir, West Boylston, 11 a.m., 2-mile hike. Meet at Gate 22 on Rt 140 starting at 10 a.m.

Walden Pond State Reservation, Concord, 12 p.m., 1-mile hike. Meet at the Thoreau House Replica.

Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, East Falmouth, 10 a.m., 1-mile hike. Meet at the visitor center.

Willard Brook State Forest, Townsend, 10 a.m. 1.5-mile hike. Meet at park headquarters for registration at 9 a.m.

DCR recommends those participating call the parks prior to arrival, as a hike may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Additionally, those parks not listed will be open for self guided tours. More information can be found at mass.gov/info-details/dcr-programs-and-events.
