Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins named Korey Stringer Media Good Guy

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has been named this year’s recipient of the Korey Stringer Good Guy Award by the Minnesota chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America. This is the first time Cousins has earned the award named in Stringer’s honor, which recognizes a player who exemplifies professionalism and authenticity in a way that helps reporters do their job on a daily basis.

As the starter for the Vikings, Cousins conducts a weekly press conference with reporters in the locker room at TCO Performance Center. He admitted that he started to come out of his shell this season more than ever before, offering deeper insight into playing the position, while routinely cracking jokes, as well.

Though the weekly press conferencees stopped after he landed on injured reserve, Cousins voluntarily talked to reporters for about 20 minutes last month, opening up about everything from suffering the injury to having surgery to grinding through the recovery process.

This is the first time a quarterback has won the Korey Stringer Good Guy Award since Daunte Culpepper went back-to-back in 2003 and 2004. The only other repeat winners are linebacker Ben Leber in 2007 and 2010 and Captain Munnerlyn in 2015 and 2016.

“I’m going for the three-peat,” Cousins joked while playfully campaigning to stick around with his contract set to expire in March. “That’s what my goal is.”

Stringer was an offensive tackle for the Vikings and one of the team’s most popular players from 1995 to 2001. The first-round draft pick made the Pro Bowl in 2000. On Aug. 1, 2001, he died from complications brought on by heat stroke during the Vikings’ training camp in Mankato, Minn.

Addison questionable

After so much bad news on the injury front lately, there finally might be some good news as the Vikings are officially listing rookie receiver Jordan Addison (ankle) as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Packers. There was initial concern that Addison might be ruled out after he missed practice at the start of this week.

Asked about how Addison progressed this week, head coach Kevin O’Connell noted he was able to get some work in as a limited participant.

“I thought he moved around pretty well,” O’Connell said. “We’ll see how he feels after the work and see if we can continue that progression he’s made.”

In addition to Addison, cornerback Mekhi Blackmon (shoulder) and linebacker Troy Dye (wrist) are also officially listed as questionable. The only players who have been ruled out at this point are cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. (knee), safety Theo Jackson (toe) and receiver Jalen Nailor (concussion).

O’Neill ready to return

It seemed as if right tackle Brian O’Neill (ankle) was in position to make his return after being a full participant in practice this week. That is indeed the case as O’Neill has no injury designation heading into Sunday’s game. He will slide back into his starting spot on the offensive line after missing the past couple of games.
