Rays star a no-show with Dominican authorities amid investigation

Wander Franco’s legal troubles continue to mount.

The Tampa Bay Rays shortstop, who is currently under investigation for alleged relationships with multiple underaged girls, did not present himself to the Dominican Republic’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Children Adolescents in Santo Domingo for questioning.

Agency director Olga Diná Llaverías confirmed to reporters that Franco was a no-show, and that the investigation will continue. “There are a few options in the investigative process,” she said.

Franco and his legal team were issued the mandatory summons for 11 a.m. Thursday on Wednesday, after authorities in the Dominican Republic conducted failed raids on his and his mother’s homes in Baní, in search of him. According to the Associated Press, Franco has also dismissed his counsel.

On Aug. 13, Franco was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl. Major League Baseball opened an investigation that night, and the Rays placed him on the restricted list the following day. A week later, the league put him on administrative leave. By month’s end, the allegations had tripled. Franco, 22, is married and shares two children with his wife, including one born when he was 17 years old.

“At least two people have filed legal action against Franco,” wrote ESPN’s Juan Arturo Recio on Thursday. “He is also under investigation for allegedly having a relationship with a third minor, sources told ESPN, although there has been no formal complaint to authorities from the third girl.”

No criminal charges have been filed against Franco at this time.

The Red Sox have still only spent $1 million in free agency, and their path forward is unclear.

While members of the organization have publicly and privately stated that starting pitching is the clear priority this offseason, that will only be possible through a sizable spend or trade. And, in the aftermath of losing top free-agent arm Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the Los Angeles Dodgers, there’s growing concern that Boston may be pivoting from spending big altogether.

The Red Sox have spoken to Scott Boras’ agency, which represents Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell, two of the top remaining starters on the market. ESPN’s Enrique Rojas reported on Thursday that the Red Sox are targeting Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodriguez. They’ve also been linked to former White Sox star Lucas Giolito and Japanese left-hander Shōta Imanaga, whose posting window closes on Jan. 11.

However, the most realistic addition at the moment is none other than James Paxton, who signed with Boston two offseasons ago. He became a free agent in November, after missing the entire ’22 season and pitching well for about half of his 96 innings this season.
