Local shops rule for great last-minute gifts

Last week, when we still had the luxury of time, we offered ideas for thoughtful and creative gifts for your friends and loved ones based on their interests.

But this week is go time. By now we’ve missed most online ordering windows. (Unless, that is, you want to pay lots of money for 24-hour delivery fees). So that means it’s time to lace up those boots, hit the pavement, and get out there and buy your gifts in person. But that also means something quite nice: buying local.

Starting in the stomping grounds of my clothing boutique, Gretta Luxe, downtown Wellesley is one of my favorite areas for mom-and-pop holiday shops. I can’t help but point out one of my favorite gifts of the season for fashion lovers — the Stella McCartney Quilted Gold Crossbody Bag ($895 at Gretta Luxe, 94 Central St., Wellesley, 781-237-7010) is the perfect present for anyone looking for a snazzy and high-style way to sail into the new year.

A few blocks over, drop by Wasik’s (61 Central St., Wellesley, 781-237-0916). I’m always impressed by the knowledge and care that this family-run shop puts into its stock of gift baskets, absolutely incredible cheeses, hard-to-find specialty foods. Tell them what your favorite foodie loves to eat, and they’ll hand-curate a basket for you, made up of treats you can’t find just anywhere.

Also nearby is a new kind of beauty boutique well worth discovering. Flyte.70 (555 Washington St., # 3, Wellesley, 339-225-8258) is owned by two local beauty experts who create luxury cosmetics for women who love looking gorgeous, modern, and vital. For this holiday, they’ve created a Holiday Custom Core Collection Set ($152) of five of their best selling products, which would cost $189 if each product were bought individually. I’d want to get it as a gift for the Glowback Global Prep it includes alone — it’s one of the most natural-looking skin glow products out there.

In Boston, it’s tough to find any neighborhood more conducive to independent shopping than Beacon Hill. Charles Street is dotted with small and friendly stores. You know that friend who can never get enough decorative pillows? Help feed her addiction with the many offerings at Flat of The Hill (60 Charles St., Boston, 617-619-9977). The collection here ranges from botanical-inspired tapestried pillows to beautifully embroidered oversized and soft-as-can-be numbers.

Just a few doors down is one of the most darling and exquisite spots in town — Rugg Road Paper Company (105 Charles St., Boston, 617-742-0002). Here you’ll find custom-made stationery and unique designs, plus artistic stamps and journals sure to inspire literally anyone in your life who relishes beautiful details. They also sell spectacular handmade gift wraps.

And lest we forget Fido, Paws on Charles (123 Charles St., Boston, 617-936-4163) has got him covered. Pampered pooches (and a few cosseted cats) will be sitting pretty after you load up on treats for them here — baked bones from BowWow Bakery and PolkaDog; truly stylish collars and leashes made by Belted Cow, Puppy, Foggy Dog, and Sassy Woof; and a slew of toys by Spunky Pup, Tall Tails, and HuggleHounds.

And last but not least, there’s the shop that will be as rewarding for you  as for your giftee. Beacon Hill Books & Cafe (71 Charles St., Boston, 617-945-4713) is four floors that are technically a bookshop, but feel more like the elegant library of your favorite aunt. So pick her up a terrific novel or two here, and then settle into the space’s lovely café for its afternoon tea service. The ideal way to reward yourself for both supporting local businesses and personalizing all of your gift-giving efforts this year.
