What to know about Patriots new quarterback Nathan Rourke

Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is just getting to know new quarterback Nathan Rourke, but we have more information on the team’s latest addition.

The Patriots claimed Rourke off waivers from the Jaguars on Monday afternoon to replace Will Grier, who had been signed off of the team’s practice squad and onto the Chargers’ 53-man roster.

O’Brien said he found out the news before Tuesday’s video conference calls.

“Honestly, I just found that out, and I met him in the hallway,” O’Brien said. “So, it’s gonna be good to work with him and we’ll get going with him as soon as possible.”

One team source said Rourke, who played collegiately at Ohio, in the CFL with the BC Lions and this preseason with the Jaguars, “makes good decisions and operates quickly.”

He noted that Rourke also has some mobility and playmaking ability for when things break down in front of him.

Rourke rushed for 3,007 yards with 49 rushing touchdowns in three college seasons at Ohio before going undrafted in 2020. He also completed 58.7% of his passes for 7,453 yards with 60 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

He went 23-of-35 for 348 yards with one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown in the preseason this summer.

Rourke, who was in the NFL from 2020 to 2022, had a fantastic final campaign in the CFL, completing 78.7% of his passes for 3,349 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added 304 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

He joins Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones on the Patriots’ QB depth chart. It seems unlikely that he would receive playing time this season, barring injury.
