Golf: Second-round 72 leaves Frankie Capan III facing uphill climb to potential PGA Tour card

Entering the day at 1-under par, Harry Higgs tallied five birdies and no bogeys en route to a 5-under 65 on Friday at Sawgrass Country Club in Florida to move to 6-under par and into the top five after two rounds of the final stage of PGA Tour Q School.

That was exactly the type of round his playing partner, North Oaks native Frankie Capan III, was looking for but couldn’t quite muster Friday. Capan shot a 2-over 72 on Friday to move back to 1-over par for the tournament. He double-bogeyed the par-4, 13th hole after sending his tee shot out of bounds.

Capan heads into the weekend of the no-cut event in a tie for 61st, seven shots back of the top-five finish needed to secure a PGA Tour card. If he can’t finish top five, Capan will be a member of the Korn Ferry Tour — the PGA Tour’s primary feeder tour where he just spent his rookie season — for the second year.

Wayzata grad Van Holmgren, one of Capan’s good friends, shot an even-par round of 70 to remain at even-par for the tournament, leaving him in a tie for 46th.
