Air-Cooled Porsches Pushed to New Heights

Theon Design, a renowned automotive atelier specialising in reimagining classic Porsche 911s, has unveiled its latest creation – GBR002, the second commission for a discerning UK customer. This bespoke masterpiece embodies Theon’s unwavering respect for Porsche’s heritage while seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology and modern sensibilities.

GBR002 exudes an aura of classic elegance, its Oak Green Metallic paintwork complemented by dark ‘ghost’ stripes, warm satin chrome brightwork, and matching 18″ Fuchs-style wheels. Beneath its timeless exterior lies a carefully enhanced powertrain, a testament to Theon’s commitment to preserving the essence of the Porsche driving experience.

At the heart of GBR002 pulsates a meticulously tuned 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, delivering an exhilarating 406bhp – the ultimate expression of air-cooled performance. This potent powerplant boasts a specific output of over 100bhp per litre, rivalling many modern performance cars without compromising the character and driveability of the classic air-cooled flat six.

Theon’s signature aluminium upgrade interior package seamlessly blends modern convenience with the timeless charm of a classic Porsche cockpit. Muslin leather seats and trim, interwoven with leather sections and green stripes that echo the exterior, create an ambience of refined luxury. A classically styled high-end Bluetooth-enabled stereo ensures seamless connectivity, while a new centre console extension provides wireless phone charging.

The GBR002’s frunk (front trunk/boot) features side pods in satin lacquered visual carbon fibre, a subtle reminder of the car’s lightweight performance underpinnings. It epitomises Theon Design’s unwavering dedication to the Porsche ethos, meticulously transforming the customer’s classic 911 dream into reality. With its enhanced performance, unparalleled craftsmanship, and meticulous attention to detail, GBR002 represents the pinnacle of air-cooled 911 rejuvenation.

A Comprehensive Revival of an Icon

GBR002’s transformation began with a 1992 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 2. The donor car was meticulously stripped to its bare metal, allowing for a thorough restoration and the integration of a lightweight, yet immensely strong carbon fibre body. To ensure a flawless fit, Theon meticulously scanned and digitised each panel before employing 3D design software to guarantee precise alignment. This commitment to detail extends throughout the vehicle, with a lightweight Mil-Spec wiring harness integrated into the strengthened body shell, modern dual air-conditioning compressors, and an all-new electric-power steering pump relocated to the front for optimised weight distribution.

The heart and soul of GBR002 is its glorious air-cooled 4.0-litre engine, Theon’s most powerful to date. This meticulously tuned powerplant delivers a thrilling 406bhp at 7,200rpm, producing a broad torque curve and a peak of 326lb/ft at 5,800rpm. Theon’s dedication to maximising performance is evident in the inclusion of a gunmetal-finished plenum, a matching fan, and a bespoke independent throttle body system from British specialists Jenvey.

As with all Theon builds, GBR002 boasts exceptional dynamics and handling, thanks to a sophisticated switchable, five-stage TracTive Active Controlled Electronics (ACE) damping system. This meticulously calibrated system ensures exceptional performance and resolute traction on the most demanding roads, from motorways to B-roads. GBR002 remains composed, compliant, and capable in all driving conditions.

GBR002’s interior reflects Theon’s meticulous attention to detail, with every element carefully considered and crafted. Matching the exterior’s elegance, the interior exudes a sense of refined luxury and purposeful practicality. Recaro CS seats and Theon touring rear seats, all upholstered in Muslin leather with woven alcantara and leather panels, create a supportive and comfortable driving environment.

A Testament to British Craftsmanship

GBR002 is a testament to Theon Design’s unwavering commitment to British craftsmanship. Every aspect of the car has been meticulously hand-finished by a team of skilled artisans, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. From the exquisitely stitched leatherwork to the precisely machined aluminium components, GBR002 exudes an aura of quality and refinement that is unmatched by mass-produced vehicles.

Prices for Theon Design commissions start at £380,000. Each car is a totally unique collaboration with the customer and takes 18 months to build. Price excludes donor car, shipping, and local taxes.
