Pearl Harbor remembrance at Charlestown Navy Yard kicks off Army-Navy weekend
A gathering at the Charlestown Navy Yard to remember and honor the 2,403 Americans who died during the Pearl Harbor attack will kick off Army-Navy weekend in New England.
The event will feature a remembrance gathering at the USS Constitution Museum and wreath-laying ceremony on the USS Cassin Young. It starts at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, 82 years ago to the day of the attack which initiated the country’s entry into World War II.
“On this day of remembrance and reflection, the National Parks of Boston is proud to honor the service people of the United States Navy past and present, and share the history of USS Cassin Young with visitors from around the world,” National Parks of Boston Superintendent Michael Creasey said.
Rifle and cannon salutes, along with the playing of taps, will accompany the wreath-laying on the USS Cassin Young, a World War II-era destroyer celebrating its 80th anniversary of commissioning this month.
In Foxboro, festivities leading up to Saturday’s Army-Navy football tilt get underway Thursday evening when a fan fest opens at 5 p.m.
Fans will get an up-close look and chance to take photos with U.S. Army tanks and U.S. Navy assets, as well as enjoy giveaways and activations by Army-Navy Game sponsors. A viewing party of Thursday Night Football will be held, as fans try to find as much joy as possible when the slumping Patriots take on the Steelers.
The fan fest will be open Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. Activities will be held at the Enel Plaza, by the Patriots ProShop.
The first battle of the weekend takes place Friday in and around Boston with the Patriot Games and Parade, featuring friendly competition between cadets from the United States Military Academy and the midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy.
The full-day competition begins at 8 a.m. at Minuteman National Park, near Old North Bridge, in Concord, with a tug of war. A parade is set for 11 a.m. from Boston Common to Faneuil Hall which will host an Army-Navy pep rally and pull-up competition.
A tree lighting at USS Constitution at 4:30 p.m., follows a 1:30 relay relay at Charlestown Navy Yard, to wrap up the day.
