Snow possible Wednesday, according to NWS, with chilly days ahead

The first week of December may bring the first real snow storm of the season to the Boston region, according to the National Weather Service.

Cold weather overnight Tuesday into Wednesday paired with predicted precipitation could leave about an inch of snow on the ground by the time the morning commute begins, according to NWS Meteorologist Kyle Pederson.

“We could see some snow actually for eastern Massachusetts,” Pederson said.

A rain “washout” for most of the region on Sunday should mostly subside by the time commuters are heading to work Monday morning, but rain is expected to start falling again by the afternoon. There could be areas of patchy fog Monday before 9 a.m. High temperatures are expected to top out near 48 degrees during an overcast day in Boston, with low-50s south of the city.

Rain becomes patchy overnight Monday, Pederson said, with temperatures above freezing and around the mid-30s.

Partly sunny skies on Tuesday do not translate to a warm day, with the mercury stuck barely above overnight lows and not breaking out of the upper 30s.

There is some chance rain returns before midnight, and by early Wednesday morning, with temperatures in the freezing range, snow will likely begin to fall around Boston.

“Right now that accumulation is generally a coating to less than an inch. We’re not expecting a major event or anything, but just something to keep an eye on for Wednesday,” Pederson said.

Snow could continue through Wednesday morning but switch to rain as temperatures warm toward the middle 30s. Chances of precipitation are around 30%, according to the weather service.

Overnight Wednesday into Thursday it will be “very chilly,” Pederson said, with lows in the mid-20s and winds pushing at 15 mph. Clouds overnight are not expected to bring any more precipitation.

The cold stays through a mostly sunny Thursday, when temperatures are expected to climb back above freezing and into the middle 30s, but just barely.

Freezing temperatures return again overnight Thursday into Friday, with highs in the upper 20s and partly cloudy skies.

It should warm up a bit on Friday, Pederson said, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s around Boston and mostly sunny weather. A few clouds overnight don’t bring too much cold, and temperatures are expected to remain above freezing going into Saturday.

It could be a warmer weekend, according to the NWS, with highs in 50s, but Pederson cautioned that could change.
