A 27-year-old St. Paul man died following a one-car crash Wednesday morning in St. Croix County, Wis.

Darwin Maradiaga-Castellon was driving a 2004 Dodge Durango around 6:50 a.m. Wednesday when he apparently lost control of the vehicle in the 2300 block of Hwy 63/64 in the Town of Cylon, went into the north ditch and hit a tree, according to the St. Croix County, Wis., Sheriff’s Office.

Maradiaga-Castellon was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul by ambulance and later died from his injuries.

A passenger, Wilmer Redondo-Reyes, 39, of St. Paul, sustained minor injuries. Both men were wearing seat belts.

Icy road conditions may have been a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation, according to a press release from the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office was assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, New Richmond Fire and EMS, and Deer Park Fire.

This incident marks the 13th fatality recorded by St. Croix County in 2023, the release states.
