After the Kowloon brawl on Thanksgiving Eve, Saugus Board of Selectmen anticipates police report

After a wild and bloody brawl broke out at the iconic Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus on Thanksgiving Eve, the local board of selectmen will wait for the police report before deciding about the landmark’s liquor license.

Kowloon on Route 1 shut its door Wednesday night, one of the biggest drinking nights of the year, following the brawl — which has since gone viral on social media. A person used a glass bottle in the fight, which is a felony, police said.

Saugus police officers working a detail at the restaurant on the very busy night struggled to immediately break up the chaotic fight. Several people were detained and questioned by police, but were not arrested. The investigation remained ongoing.

Now, the Saugus Board of Selectmen is anticipating a police report on the incident. The police department serves as the liquor agent for the Board of Selectmen, which issues the liquor licenses in town.

“When we have an incident and potential violation of the liquor rules and regulations from an establishment, the police provide a separate and specific report to the Board of Selectmen for review,” Selectmen Vice Chair Jeffrey Cicolini said in a statement on Monday. “I cannot and will not make any assumptions as to what took place that evening.

“We are expecting a report from the Police Department, and the Board will then consider its options at that time, depending on the findings of the report,” he added. “Although the events that took place are unfortunate, a fight in a restaurant or bar does not in itself constitute a violation of a liquor license.”

Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta noted that there are videos circulating on social media about the Kowloon incident. She also said the board is anticipating the police report, which the members will review.

“We are expecting this report from the Police Department, and the Board will take appropriate action at that time, depending on the findings of the report,” Panetta said in a statement.

Some people at the restaurant needed medical treatment following the brawl.

“The Kowloon is a family friendly restaurant, unfortunately a few unruly patrons ruined a nice evening for many others,” Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli said after the incident. “A disturbance such as this on Thanksgiving Eve is unacceptable and disgusting.”

A couple of hours before the fight, Kowloon on social media posted photos of a long line outside the establishment.

“We are very grateful for the hundreds of customers who are waiting outside to join us for their pre-Thanksgiving meal,” Kowloon Restaurant wrote. “Thank you!”
