Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson speaks up about harassment on social media: ‘I’m just tired of it’
Vikings star receiver Justin Jefferson reached a breaking point this week.
After internalizing the vitriol on social media as long as he could, the 24-year-old finally decided to clap back. He took to the website formerly known as Twitter and made it clear that he doesn’t care how much his hamstring injury is impacting the outcome of people’s fantasy football games, he is solely focused on getting back to 100 percent so he can help the Vikings win actual football games.
Asked for clarification, Jefferson emphasized that his direct messages have been a cesspool since he suffered his hamstring injury against the Kansas City Chiefs a month and a half ago. He has gone on to miss games against the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos.
His continued absence has subjected him to a massive amount of harassment on social media.
“Y’all have no idea,” Jefferson said. “It’s honestly crazy.”
Why did he finally decide to respond to the trolls?
“I’ve been getting it for five or six weeks now,” Jefferson said. “I’m just tired of it.”
The most frustrating part is that he wants to be out there on the field more than anybody. He’s doing everything he can to get back to 100 percent while also having to sift through hate when he gets home.
Though he understands it comes with the territory of playing at the highest level — “You do good and they want to praise you,” he said. “You do bad and they want to talk about you.” — it takes a toll having to deal with it on a daily basis.
“It’s draining,” Jefferson said. “All of these other sources saying different things that are not true on how I’m feeling. It’s a crazy situation. It is what it is.”
One theory going around social media is that perhaps he’s been slow playing the recovery process because he doesn’t have a contract extension. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Not for a guy who took every single rep in training camp while contract negotiations were ongoing.
“Everybody is going to have their own opinions of what they think I’m thinking,” Jefferson said. “It’s not for the contract at all. I’ve said that from the beginning of this season, that it wasn’t my main priority.”
What is?
“To be back on the field playing with my teammates and compete for a Super Bowl,” Jefferson said. “That’s what I’m mostly focused on. It’s been said plenty of times. The contract will come whenever it comes.”
Notably, after talking to reporters on Friday afternoon at TCO Performance Center, Jefferson deactivated some of his social media accounts. He recently started running at top speeds, and thus, is getting closer with the Vikings set to host the Bears on Monday Night Football.
“We’re going to weigh the options correctly,” Jefferson said. “If I’m feeling good, I will play.”
