Red Wings thump Bruins, 5-2

Before the annual Black Friday game, the Bruins were aligned with the Detroit Red Wings to be first-round playoff opponents.

There is a lot of time between now and April, of course. But as of the moment, that looks like a nightmare of matchup for the locals.

The B’s suffered their second regulation loss of the season and the Wings own both of them. On Friday at the Garden, the B’s started poorly and couldn’t get climb out of the hole they created for themselves, losing 5-2.

The B’s went into the third down 3-1 but got one back at 4:12. Mason Lohrei fired a shot wide that took a fortuitous bounce out to Danton Heinen in front and he roofed it past Ville Husso.

But in keeping with how the day was going for the B’s, the Wings got it back 56 seconds later. Brandon Carlo was called for hooking and, for the second time, the Wings scored almost immediately off a faceoff win. This time Dylan Larkin finished it off to make it 4-2.

Jim Montgomery pulled Jeremy Swayman with 4:29 remaining, but the Wings worked both harder and smarter on the 6-on-5. And eventually, Brad Marchand’s pass was picked off high in the Detroit zone by David Perron and he buried the long distance shot for the empty-netter.

The Bruins started the game much like they did in their 3-1 win in Florida on Wednesday – not well. The only difference was that, on Friday, the B’s got nicked for their mistakes and they went into the first intermission down 2-0.

The Red Wings got on the board when the B’s took the first penalty of the game and it cost them. Morgan Geekie, back in the lineup since being out with an upper body injury since Nov. 6, was called for holding when he reached out and grabbed a Wing when he was trying to beat out an icing call.

On the power play, Detroit won the faceoff, it went back to Shayne Gostisbehere at the blue line and his shot was deflected by J.T. Compher past Swayman at 5:13.

The B’s did get some chances. David Pastrnak hit the post on one opportunity and they had a decent power play that went for naught. But mostly their most promising chances fizzled when passes were in skates or just out of reach.

And at 15:01, disaster struck. Trying to break out of the zone, Matt Poitras made a nice shift around Compher before the blue line and skated into the middle of the ice. Just outside the blueline, Alex DeBrincat simply picked Poitras’ pocket and scored on a clean breakaway to make it 2-0.

The B’s had a couple more hiccups to start the second, but when Justin Holl was called for holding Charlie Coyle’s stick, the B’s got on the board. On the power play, Jake DeBusk scored his second goal in as many games, taking a couple of whacks at a rebound of a Pastrnak shot, finally beating Husso at 3:00.

The B’s had a double minor on Geekie nullified when, upon review, it was ruled he hit Gostibehere on the follow-through. But on the next shift, Lohrei was called for high sticking. The Wings didn’t officially score on the PP, but seconds after Lohrei left the box and before he could get back in the play, Robbi Fabbri one-timed a Daniel Spring pass to Swayman’s short side to give Detroit its two-goal lead back at 13:24.

Poitras earned a late power play by drawing a hook but the B’s couldn’t cash in on it and they went into the third down by two goals.
