Bailey Zappe says players don’t know which Patriots QB will start

FOXBORO — Apparently Bill Belichick isn’t just keeping the Patriots’ starting quarterback decision a mystery to the media.

When asked if players know who will start at quarterback in Week 12 against the Giants, Bailey Zappe answered, “no.”

Jones and Zappe both took reps at quarterback in front of the media this week. Jones, Zappe and Will Grier took first-team reps during the bye week. Rookie Malik Cunningham told the Herald this week that he hasn’t regularly practiced at quarterback since Week 6.

Zappe was asked if he finds it unusual that Belichick hasn’t told the team.

“That’s Coach Belichick’s decision,” Zappe said. “He’s the head coach for a reason. He makes those decisions, and we just play football.”

Jones told the media this week that his plan was to start. What’s Zappe’s plan?

“Yeah, my plan every week is just to be prepared, take every rep like it’s a game rep,” Zappe said. “If my number’s called to start this week, then it’s called, if not then I’m going to do my best to help the team win.”

Zappe has struggled in three relief appearances this season, going 10-of-25 for 104 yards with an interception. When he replaced Jones in the two-minute drill Week 10 against the Colts in Germany, Zappe threw a pick. The other two times he played this season came when the Patriots were getting blown out by the Raiders and Saints.

So, does Zappe believe he’d play better with a full week of practice?

“I mean, who knows? Whenever I get the opportunity, those opportunities, I’ve got to go in there and do my job,” Zappe said. “Haven’t done that to the best of my ability so when the next opportunity comes, whenever it is — this week, next week, whenever — I’ll make sure I take advantage of that opportunity and just try to go out there to help the team win.”

Zappe was 2-0 as a starter as a rookie last season. His struggles started in training camp and preseason before he was waived at roster cuts. He initially signed to the Patriots’ practice squad before being promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 1.
