North Quincy rolls past Quincy

QUINCY — For 91 years, Patriot League foes Quincy and North Quincy have delivered one classic after the next, and Ben Hudach became the latest member to etch his name into Raiders lore.

The senior running back had 79 yards rushing to go with 35 yards receiving, accounting for three total touchdowns as North Quincy (5-6) coasted to a 43-20 romp in the contest’s latest installment.

“Every year is different,” Craig said. “You can see how the season goes, but Quincy vs. North Quincy, you throw the records out. Those kids played tough today. Well respect to them and their staff over there. They were ready to go, we were ready to go, and it’s always a great game.”

Despite battling nagging leg injuries all season long, Hudach saved his best performance for last. As did junior quarterback Mikey Galligan, who finished 12-for-20 passing with 238 yards and a trio of scores himself.

After pinning the Presidents deep with a punt early on, the Raiders forced a safety to take a 2-0 lead. North Quincy capitalized offensively shortly thereafter, as Tim Toland scrambled 10 yards to pay dirt to put the Raiders ahead 9-0 in the first quarter. They were far from finished.

Quincy turned the ball over on downs on its next drive, setting up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Galligan to Nate Sampson to make it a 15-0 ballgame entering the second frame.

“I’ve been waiting for this game all year,” Galligan said. “I didn’t get to play in this game last year. To be able to come out here and beat those guys by that amount? It’s awesome.”

Then, it was Hudach’s time to shine. The senior corralled a five-yard touchdown pass from Galligan with 6:28 to play in the half. He followed things up later with a two-yard touchdown scamper as North Quincy took a 27-6 lead with 4:35 remaining in the third quarter.

“I work really hard, man,” Hudach said afterward. “I love this school, have a lot of passion. I just love it here. The community really backs us all up, and you get that ‘NQ’ pride. Our senior group, we all have that. We all came together. We’ve had the same group for all four years. We just worked hard. From youth, up. It’s just remarkable how we came out on top. Such an awesome game.”

Hudach rushed for a nine-yard touchdown with 9:46 left in regulation, putting a cap on his epic day as North Quincy seized a 43-14 lead at the time.

Nate Goff finished with 58 yards passing and a touchdown for Quincy, while Leo Steinberg (70 yards rushing, touchdown) and Owen Desmond (31 yards rushing, touchdown) added a spark for the Presidents.

“Last year was kind of a heartbreaker,” said Craig. “We played right up to the end. We threw it to the end zone on the last play, and we came up just a little bit short. (It left) a sour taste in our mouths, and we used that as fuel in the offseason. We brought that back this year, and these kids really stepped up.”
