Girls soccer all-star game honors coach fighting cancer

MIDDLEBORO — Natick’s girls soccer team accomplished just about everything imaginable this season, including capturing a Div. 1 state championship this past week.

However, few knew that the team was playing every game with one collective goal — fighting for Assistant Coach Kari-Ann Daley, who was in the midst of her own battle with breast cancer.

On Sunday, hundreds of athletes arrived on the campus of Middleboro High School to participate in the Eastern Massachusetts Girls Soccer Coaches Association’s running of the Rich Bourgelas Making Strides Against Breast Cancer All-Star Games, looking to raise awareness for a greater cause.

At the end of the day, the Red Hawks saw much of their hard work rewarded. Natick coach Dave Wainwright was named the Div. 1 Coach of the Year during the ceremonies, while senior Kaitlyn Lebrun was named a 2023 All-American, a fitting end to an amazing campaign for Natick.

“It was a great journey,” Wainwright said. “For us, it will be something that we’ll never forget. For us to have this game, be able to have it for Coach Daly, know where the money and the cause is going, it’s just very comforting for her.”

Wainwright managed his group to a victory in the morning opener, and in dramatic fashion. Franklin star Anya Zub sniped the equalizer in the 75th minute, before West Bridgewater’s Kylie Fuller chipped home the game-winner in the 79th as Team White rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Team Pink, 3-2.

Masconomet’s Alison Lecesse was selected as the Div. 2 Coach of the Year, and watched her group roll to a 2-1 victory behind Lexington forward Gabby Fainelli (two goals), who recorded the clinching tally in a shortened 60-minute tilt.

In addition to Lebrun, Hopkinton’s Georgina Clarke was tabbed as one of two EMSGCA All-Americans. The Boston College-bound senior led the Hillers to one of their best seasons in recent program history, and was able to close her high school career out with one final match.

“It feels amazing,” Clarke said. “I have to thank my coaches and my team for getting me to this point, because I never would have gotten it without them. They help me through so much. Every game was a push, and we had a good, undefeated record throughout the (regular) season. So, I feel that really helped set the bar, get us ready for the playoffs.”

Other Coaches of the Year included Dover-Sherborn’s Evren Gunduz, who took home the Div. 3 honor, while Nancy Waddell of Hamilton-Wenham (Div. 4) and Hull’s Stew Bell (Div. 5) were also selected.

On top of being named an All-American, Clarke was chosen as the Div. 1 Player of the Year for Hopkinton. Notre Dame (Hingham) star Sydney Comeau was named the recipient for Div. 2, while Hanover’s Sophia Foley (Div. 3), Tess Barrett of Cohasset (Div. 4) and Korynne Holden of Westport were honored, respectively.

EMGSCA President Greg Rowe is hopeful that the event can continue to grow, especially after the success of this year’s installment.

“This year’s running to this point has been fun,” said Rowe. “Puma gives us a pair of cleats to raffle off. Every kid that donates at least $10 gets into the raffle. We tried to raise $1,000, which would have been $10 per athlete. At this point (as of this week), we have raised over $2,300 for (breast cancer research).”
