Westborough defends Div. 2 state volleyball championship

WORCESTER — In the Div. 2 volleyball state finals, No. 1 Westborough (21-1) looked to defend its title against No. 3 Canton (24-1) at Worcester State University. The top-seeded Rangers put together a clinic, rolling to a 3-0 victory to repeat as champions.

“I’m extremely proud of our girls. They earned it,” said Westborough coach Roger Anderson, “(The seniors) set a level of play at Westborough High School that was just off the charts.”

Westborough were led by star senior Quinn Anderson with 19 kills and 10 digs. Georgia Tyrell added nine kills and Samantha Norman had 39 assists.

“Everybody wants to do this and I’m really happy that I got to be able to do it. It’s just dreams come true and I’m just grateful I got to do it with everyone else,” said Quinn Anderson.

In the first set, Westborough rushed out to a 14-6 lead. Anderson and Tyrell combined to propel the Rangers offense. Canton tried to turn the tide late with back to back kills from Sarah Hoban. Anderson closed the door, however, following up with her own pair of kills to help Westboro earn the 25-15 first set victory.

Westborough kept its foot on the gas pedal in the second set. The Rangers kept pace with Canton’s opening salvo and nabbed an 11-7 lead. A pair of Anderson kills and a Montana Weaver ace later in the set helped the Rangers extend to a 20-9. From there, Westborough stopped a small 3-1 run from Canton and closed out the set at 25-13.

Facing elimination, Canton threw everything it had at Westborough, pushing the Rangers to a 16-16 deadlock. The Rangers responded accordingly, going on an 8-4 run to push Canton to match point at 24-20. Canton refused to go quietly and answered with three straight points before a Tyrell spike broke through the Canton defense and clinched the match and the title for Westboro at 25-23.

“I think big moments deserve big swings and at the end you saw that from Georgia,” said Anderson.
