Marshfield knocks off two-time champion Catholic Memorial

Marshfield’s faith that it could dethrone Catholic Memorial was well placed.

Davin True rushed for three scores while Jake Brilliant hauled in two key second-half touchdown receptions as No. 4 Marshfield knocked off two-time defending champion No. 1 Catholic Memorial, 52-40, on Saturday afternoon to advance to the Div. 2 Super Bowl.

Marshfield will take on King Philip for the Div. 2 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

“I mean, we’re going to Gillette. Who doesn’t want to go to Gillette? Let’s go!’” said Brilliant

In front of a full house at Bridgewater-Raynham, Marshfield’s offense was prolific through all four quarters. The Rams scored in double-figures in each quarter, ran over 75 plays, and compiled nearly 400 yards including over 250 on the ground.

“That was unbelievable,” Marshfield coach Chris Arouca said. “When the alignments came out we knew Catholic Memorial was in our bracket. I didn’t think we would score that many points but we have a great running back and quarterback and that helps you out.”

The Rams held a 28-27 advantage at the break but forced a three and out and got a 25-yard field goal from Nick Drosopoulos to stretch the lead to 31-27. Marshfield’s defense then came through with Brady Bogni recovering a Knights fumble to set up a four-yard touchdown reception by Brilliant to stretch the advantage to 38-27.

CM got back within a possession, 38-33, on a Zach Brown four-yard touchdown but the final 12 minutes belonged to Marshfield. After Tor Maas connected with Brilliant and True for a combined 45 yards to get the Rams inside the red zone, the Rams junior quarterback connected with Brilliant for a 16-yard touchdown on a slant over the middle to extend the lead to 45-33.

Will Devine then tallied Marshfield’s second fumble recovery of the second half to set up a one-yard touchdown reception by Brady Crowley to put Marshfield in command, 52-33, with 3:03 remaining.

Giovanni Joseph opened the game with an 87-yard kick return for a touchdown to put Marshfield up 7-0. The Knights answered with consecutive scores to go in front and maintained a 27-21 lead when Peter Bourque connected with George Mather for a 56 yard touchdown and Thomas Kuefler for a 25 yard score. True, however, scored from a yard out to give Marshfield a 28-27 advantage at the half.
