Honda Issues Recall on Nearly 250,000 Vehicles from 2015 to 2020 Over Serious Engine Defect

Honda has issued a recall affecting nearly 250,000 vehicles produced between 2015 and 2020 due to a significant engine defect that poses the risk of serious damage. The recall specifically targets certain models powered by Honda’s V6 engine, including the 2016, 2018, and 2019 Pilot, the 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline, and the 2018 and 2019 Odyssey. Additionally, Acura models affected include the 2015-2020 TLX and the 2016-2020 MDX.

The cause of the recall is identified as a manufacturing defect in the engine’s crankshaft, leading to premature wear of the bearing for the connecting rod. This connecting rod is a crucial component linking the piston to the crankshaft. Honda attributes the issue to incorrect settings in the factory equipment during production, resulting in out-of-spec engine parts and subsequent failures.

Owners of the affected vehicles may observe warning signs such as unusual engine noises, stalling, decreased power, or the illumination of the check engine light. Honda estimates that only one percent of the recalled cars will require repairs. To address the issue, the company has announced that dealers will conduct free inspections of the affected models, a process that involves some engine disassembly due to the location of the problematic components.

Honda plans to notify owners of the recalled vehicles via mail starting on January 2. If individuals suspect that their Honda or Acura falls under this recall, it is advised to visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website and enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check for any recalls or safety concerns. The company is taking proactive steps to address the issue and ensure the safety of its customers by offering free inspections and repairs as needed.
