Patriots make Mac Jones look like starting QB in practice after benching
FOXBORO — It was almost as if the Patriots wanted reporters to see who was taking the top snaps at practice Wednesday.
Mac Jones worked with the Patriots’ top offensive line Wednesday in the team’s sole practice of the bye week after Sunday’s benching. Bailey Zappe and Will Grier worked with backups as the Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

The Patriots typically don’t show the media full-team drills during in-season practices. Sometimes reporters can only watch players during the stretching portion of practice. The Patriots have even allowed reporters to watch the team stretch, pulled the media for team drills and then sent them back onto the field for individual drills this season. So, it’s interesting that after Jones was benched for Bailey Zappe on Sunday during a two-minute drill while trailing 10-6 the Patriots would allow reporters to see who was the top QB on Wednesday.
Left tackle Trent Brown and running back Ty Montgomery were absent Wednesday. Offensive lineman Riley Reiff (knee), who’s on injured reserve, returned to practice. That means he should be designated to return. Cornerback J.C. Jackson (personal) also returned after being left home as the team traveled to Germany.
The Patriots will be off from Thursday to Sunday. They’ll return to the facility Monday to prepare for their Week 12 matchup with the Giants.
