Bishop Feehan nips Hopkinton, 1-0, in Div. 1 girls soccer battle
Two of the state’s premier schools were on a collision-course for a showdown all season long. At the end of the day, one was able to continue a recent dynasty.
Senior captain Madison Eddy sniped the game-winning goal off a corner kick late in the second half, as second-seeded Bishop Feehan clinched a trip to its latest Div. 1 girls soccer final with an epic 1-0 semifinal win over No. 3 Hopkinton at BC High.
“It’s always special to get to this game,” said Bishop Feehan coach Phil Silva. “Special to win it, and special to play for a state championship again. I’m really proud of this group.”
It is the first trip to a championship for Bishop Feehan (20-1-1) since 2019, when the Shamrocks last captured a state crown. However, earning the win was anything but simple as bitter wind chills encapsulated Morrissey Boulevard.
The game itself played out as expected – a rock fight between two undefeated programs, and neither school was able to find twine until the late stages.
As the second half progressed, Bishop Feehan began to create more chances, but couldn’t put a shot past Hopkinton goaltender Aila Chase. Then, the Shamrocks were awarded an opportunity in the 63rd minute, setting the stage for Eddy’s heroics.
The senior placed the ball calmly at her feet, then glanced at the sky as she said a brief prayer.
Her hopes were answered, as a sudden gust helped curve the ball past a series of defenders and just inside the far post, and the Shamrocks were championship-bound.
“I usually aim for somebody’s head,” Eddy laughed. “But I guess the wind blew it in. God just said that: ‘This is your moment.’ ”
Silva is hopeful the Shamrocks can find themselves lifting the ultimate trophy once again soon.
“This group overcame adversity earlier in the year,” said Silva. “They just stick together. They’re tough. Every game they come out together. It’s not easy getting by us. It’s not easy scoring on us, and we come up with clutch goals most nights.”
