‘Maxine’s Baby’ turns lens on Tyler Perry’s life
It’s fitting that as Tyler Perry is on view in a career-encompassing biography dedicated to his mother, this documentary is encircled by a bit of mystery.
“Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story,” on Prime Video Friday, is the result of a decade-long effort by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz to chronicle Perry’s life: From an abusive childhood with a sadistic father, his fierce love for Maxine Perry, his mother who died in 2009, and his transformation from homeless playwright into box-office behemoth and media superstar.
Bekele, 37, an Ethiopian model turned filmmaker, was Perry’s partner until 2014 when she delivered his only child, a son, Aman Tyler Perry who is being raised by his single father.
Bekele teamed with the Bronx-born Armani Ortiz who worked for Perry. In a joint Zoom interview she said, “Initially, the intention wasn’t to film a documentary. It was like, I had a front row seat of watching Tyler, because he was busier than ever.” As the doc began “around the end of 2014,” they broke up as a couple.
“Naturally,” she noted, “if you’re a filmmaker, you pick up a camera and want to document what’s happening and not miss a beat. It just kept going, then Armani joined us (in 2016) because I became a new mom and I couldn’t follow Tyler anymore. Like a joke it turned into 10 years.”
While there’s no explanation why it took so long, “She showed me what a documentary is supposed to look like, feel like. And also,” Ortiz said, “how not to insert ourselves but rather let the story be what it’s supposed to be.”
Both agree Perry did not control the final cut.
“We reached out to Tyler Perry right before we submitted it to Amazon,” Ortiz, 38, said. “It was a very nervous day for me and Gelila, but we wanted to make sure to tell his story and to tell it truthfully.”
The film likens Perry to another cultural behemoth, Walt Disney who also created an empire with his own distinctive – and culturally complicated — vision.
“For sure, Tyler first and foremost is a dreamer. That’s one of his superpowers. He’s able to really see beyond his years,” Ortiz said of the comparison.
“What he cares about most is the opportunities that he’s going to be able to afford to people like me — and especially people that look and come from where we come from.”
“The comparison to Disney is,” Bekele added, “being the innovator, right? The businessman who looks ahead and predicted the future.
“And Tyler has another layer: He is also the creative. It’s not just that he’s a studio owner, he knows what creatives need.”
