Bill Belichick breaks silence on Patriots’ decision to waive Jack Jones

The Patriots felt it was “time to move on” from cornerback Jack Jones on Monday.

That was head coach Bill Belichick’s message while speaking to the media Tuesday after Jones was waived Monday afternoon when the team returned to Foxboro from their overseas trip to Germany.

Belichick repeated it was “time to move on” when asked why the Patriots released Jones and whether it was performance-based or off-the-field issues.

“Jack’s a talented player,” Belichick said when asked about the decision to select Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and having to move on from him midway through his second season. “He showed that when he played for us at time. In the end, I felt like we just needed to move on. But he’s a talented player.”

Belichick said the team will not sign Jones to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

Jones, 25, was an older and undersized prospect at 5-foot-11, 177 pounds when he entered the draft in 2022. He had off-field issues dating back to his days in college when he was dismissed from USC and arrested in 2018 for commercial burglary of a Panda Express restaurant. The problems followed him to New England. He received an in-house suspension at the end of his rookie season. He was arrested this offseason after allegedly carrying two loaded pistols in a carry-on bag at Logan Airport in Boston. Charges against Jones were dropped, and he avoided suspension but suffered a hamstring injury prior to Week 1.

The young cornerback was benched for the first quarters of the Patriots’ Week 9 and 10 losses to the Commanders and Colts after missing curfew last week. In both games, during early defensive series’, Jones sat on the Patriots’ bench away from other reserve defenders. He played just 10 snaps in Sunday’s loss to the Colts in Germany.

The team still has Jonathan Jones, Shaun Wade, Myles Bryant, Alex Austin and J.C. Jackson on their 53-man roster, and Breon Borders and Azizi Hearn on their practice squad at cornerback. Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones are out for the season with injuries.

Jackson didn’t travel to Germany last week for his own dependability issues.

Jack Jones showed promise during his rookie season, registering two interceptions and six pass breakups in 13 games with two starts.
