‘Toucher and Rich’ breakup: 98.5’s Fred Toucher says Rich Shertenlieb shouldn’t go to WEEI, ‘get away from sports’

Where will radio host Rich Shertenlieb head to next?

His former 98.5 The Sports Hub co-host Fred Toucher is hoping Shertenlieb steers clear of the other sports radio station in town, and avoids sports talk radio altogether.

Toucher, the remaining host of 98.5’s “Toucher and Rich,” on Monday addressed the rumors that Shertenlieb made a stop at WEEI on Friday — the same day that Toucher announced Shertenlieb was leaving the morning show after a long run together.

“I heard the rumors… that he was at EEI,” Toucher said during a segment on Monday. “If I was Rich, I would not want to work at a sports station. I would want to get away from it. Like wouldn’t you? Like wouldn’t you, if you had this opportunity, wouldn’t you want to get away from sports?”

“As someone who still does care about him and I truly like him, I would hope that he just does something  where he can just flex that comedic bone man and have fun,” Toucher later added. “He doesn’t like negativity. He doesn’t like being drawn into it with the likes of me. Just go somewhere fun, like go somewhere where it’s more fun, where you don’t have to talk about this crap.”

Toucher recently signed a multiyear contract to stay at 98.5 The Sports Hub.

Speculation has started to swirl about who will be the new co-host for the morning show, and where Shertenlieb will land.

After the Toucher and Rich 98.5 social media accounts change, Fred Toucher’s new contract gets announced

“My advice to Rich would be like, ‘Dude, you’re great at production. You just want to have fun. Go get a radio job that’s super fun, like where people aren’t (expletives). I don’t know why you’d want to do sports radio,’ ” Toucher said.

“My point to Rich would be, ‘Dude, take the Matty job (Matty in the Morning on Kiss 108), or do something with Ryan Seacrest or something. Do something where you can just have fun and be goofy. No one’s going to call you out. You don’t have to talk about sports. You don’t have to be negative,’ ” Toucher later added. “He hates all that negative stuff. Just go do that. I swear to God I think that would be the best thing for him.”

Toucher stressed that he “loved” doing the morning show with Shertenlieb.

A day after Toucher announced that Shertenlieb wasn’t returning to the show, the duo exchanged text messages, according to Toucher.

“Rich sent me a short, nice text,” said Toucher, who wouldn’t share the specifics of the text out of respect for Shertenlieb.

“I said to him, ‘Hey, so good to hear from you. I’m sure you heard that I had no idea that Thursday was it. I definitely would have said goodbye. I’m very grateful for our time together. Thanks so much for your hard work. At the end, the hours of 6 to 10 were some of the greatest of my day. Hope everything is awesome with you and your family.”
