Red Sox plan to wear alternate uniforms less frequently in 2024
Over the past couple of seasons the Red Sox have worn their red, blue and yellow alternate uniforms as frequently as their standard white and gray sets, but according to manager Alex Cora the club plans to dial it back a little in 2024.
Speaking on DraftKings’ The Name Redacted Podcast, Cora said the Red Sox plan to implement a set uniform schedule that will see alternates worn on specific days of the week, with the home whites and road grays becoming much more prominent.
“We’re going to use the red on Fridays, we’re going to use the City Connect on Saturdays, and the rest of the week we’re going to wear white,” Cora said. “And on the road there’s going to be a lot of gray and the blue top on Friday. There’s going to be structure.”
The change marks a departure from the club’s more freewheeling approach from the past few seasons, with uniforms typically being chosen each game by that day’s starting pitcher. The Red Sox have also strategically broken out their yellow Boston Marathon-themed City Connects, often to provide a spark and help break the club out of a slump.
The Red Sox have gotten good results wearing yellow, going 26-7 all-time since the uniform’s introduction in 2021, but Cora said the club needs to adopt a healthier mindset when it comes to their look.
“We cannot rely on yellow whenever we suck,” Cora said. “It’s like, is it the uniforms? Is it us?”
The colorful alternates’ increased prominence has been controversial among certain segments of the fanbase, but the change will likely serve as a compromise between the more traditionally-minded fans and those who enjoy the different look. Those who prefer the classic look will see it more often, and those who enjoy the reds, blues and yellows will not only still get them, but can go to the ballpark knowing they’ll be worn in advance.
“On Saturdays, people know, City Connects,” Cora said. “You go wear yellow to Fenway Park.”
