Andover, Dante Burger grind out 26-14 win over Weymouth

ANDOVER — Andover is potentially 48 minutes away from a state championship berth.

Dante Burger rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown as Andover advanced to the Division 1 state semifinals with a 26-14 win over No. 12 Weymouth on Friday night.

The No. 4 Golden Warriors will take on defending Division 1 champion St. John’s Prep or No. 8 BC High for a spot in the Division 1 Super Bowl.

“It was a good effort against a good football team,” Andover coach EJ Perry said. “I am just happy for our seniors that they have a shot at a state championship.”

Andover (9-1) had four different players impact the scoresheet. Along with Burger, Brian Hnat and Jason DeJesus also found the end zone while Nate Bernardin made a pair of field goals. Defensively, the Golden Warriors forced a pair of Weymouth turnovers, including an interception by Connor LeBrun in the fourth quarter that halted a Wildcats comeback attempt.

After coming up empty on its initial drive, the Golden Warriors got on the board as Dom Papa connected with Hnat from four yards out to give Andover a 7-0 lead. The Golden Warriors doubled their advantage moments later. An errant snap on a Weymouth punt attempt set Andover up deep in Weymouth territory and DeJesus took the end around 24 yards for a score to give Andover a 13-0 advantage.

Mistakes hampered the visiting Wildcats, who caught the attention of many when they shut out Lincoln-Sudbury in the postseason’s opening round. Weymouth’s first five drives of the game were inflicted by either penalties, a sack, or a turnover.

The hosts, meanwhile, stretched their lead to as large as 23-0 early in the third quarter on a Burger one-yard run. Weymouth, however, clawed its way back. An Anthony Smith one-yard touchdown run on fourth down got Weymouth on the board. Then, after a 24-yard field goal by Bernardin put Andover back up 26-8, Tyler Nordstrom hit Mike Farrow for an eight-yard score to trim the deficit to 26-14.

Weymouth seemed poised to draw closer when it recovered an Andover fumble at midfield, but LeBrun came through with a crucial interception to keep Andover up by a dozen with seven minutes remaining.
