Former Red Sox coach gets same job with division rival
Carlos Febles is staying in the American League East after being fired by the Red Sox.
Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins announced Tuesday that Febles will be their new third-base coach, replacing Luis Rivera, who announced his retirement last month.
Febles held various coaching and managing roles in the Red Sox organization since 2007, and became the Major League team’s third-base coach for the 2018 championship season. He and pitching coach Dave Bush were let go at the end of this season.
While the Red Sox have yet to replace Febles, there’s been an interesting development in the search for Bush’s replacement. The Herald can confirm that their former pitcher, Andrew Bailey, is a candidate for the job.
Bailey, who’s been the San Francisco Giants’ pitching coach since 2020, has a close relationship with Boston’s new chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow. The two first pitched together in Oakland. Bailey earned AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2009, and the A’s claimed Breslow off waivers that May.
The Red Sox acquired Bailey first, in December 2011, then got Breslow at the 2012 trade deadline. The two even shared a transaction on May 6, 2013, when Breslow was activated to take Bailey’s spot on the roster when the latter went on the injured list with right biceps inflammation. Though Bailey’s season ended in shoulder-surgery two months later, the two have matching World Series rings.
Bailey even serves as the director of development for Breslow’s Strike 3 Foundation, which he founded in 2008 to bring awareness and raise money for childhood cancer research. (Breslow’s sister survived thyroid cancer as a teenager.)
