High School Football Roundup: East Ridge continues Cinderella run to state

East Ridge 13, Minnetonka 10: East Ridge has now won as many games in the playoffs as it did during the entire regular season. And that has the Raptors in the state tournament.

Tanner Zolnosky’s 8-yard scoring strike to Kyle Frendt with 4 minutes, 27 seconds to play in the fourth quarter put the sixth-seeded Raptors (4-6) on top for good.

East Ridge’s other two scores were both field goals off the foot of Luke Ryerse. The Raptors have topped the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in its quadrant, and will get a date with top-seeded Lakeville South on Friday at St. Michael-Albertville.

Lakeville South 30, Shakopee 13: Connor Cade ran for three scores, but the Cougars (9-1) opening score of the night came via a safety. And the first offensive points were on an 8-yard passing touchdown from Gaven Dean to Coltin Smith.

Stillwater 49, Rochester Mayo 31: Stillwater (8-2) compiled 546 total yards of offense, experiencing success in both the air and on the ground.

Nick Kinsey threw for 251 yards and four scores, while Emilio Rosario Matias ran for 193 yards and three touchdowns. Joseph Hoheisel had eight grabs for 163 yards and a score.

Stillwater’s offense needed to produce in a track meet where Rochester Mayo quarterback Rees Grimsrud threw for 346 yards and four scores.

The Ponies are into the state quarterfinals for the second-straight season. They’ll play Edina on Thursday at Park Center after the Hornets toppled Maple Grove.

CLASS 5A

St. Thomas Academy 43, Bloomington Jefferson 14: Savion Hart ran for three touchdowns for the Cadets (8-2), and was somehow outdone by a more potent passing combination.

Maximus Sims threw three touchdown passes, all of which went to Luke Dobbs. The three scoring strikes totaled 188 yards.

The Cadets will meet Owatonna in the state quarterfinals next Saturday at noon at Woodbury High School.

CLASS 4A

Hill-Murray 42, Chisago Lakes 36: Simon Seidl returned a kickoff 93 yards for a score in the opening frame Friday, and Hill-Murray (8-2) never really stopped scoring from there. Special teams was key for the Pioneers, who also returned a blocked kick for a touchdown.

Alex Gross ran for a pair of touchdowns and quarterback Jackson Reeves ran for one and threw for another. The Pioneers led by 20 in the final frame before Chisago Lakes scored the game’s final two touchdowns.

Gavin Lewis and Evan Lavalle each ran in two scores for Chisago Lakes (8-3). Hill-Murray will play Byron in the state quarters Thursday at Eastview High School.

CLASS 3A

Cannon Falls 60, St. Agnes 34: Preston Schoenfelder ran in four scores for Cannon Falls (9-2), while Derrik Bechtholdt added three more to hand the Aggies (9-1) their first and only loss of the season.
