Top celeb looks of the summer
This summer’s been flying by, but this is a good moment to take stock of the season’s fashion trends and outstanding looks we’ve seen so far. Celebrities, luminaries, and royals alike have given us plenty of ideas to inspire our wardrobes. Here are a few highlights, along with thoughts on where to find pieces that carry the trends into your own closet.
Sheer Perfection
Summer heat means that light fabrics are everywhere. And in terms of full transparency, stars like Dakota Johnson and Zoë Kravitz have taken the lightest (and most see-through) designs to the limit. They’ve shown off daring sheer dresses, like Johnson did with her navy blue Gucci frock at the Tribeca Film Festival, and Kravitz did in a black top, and Anya Taylor-Joy’s sheer and strapless dress from Jacquemus at the Cannes Film Festival. Of course sheer can be tricky to pull off in a tasteful way, so make sure you’ve got enough coverage going on underneath. That’s the case with the Sheer Knit Draped Top ($158 on fwrd.com) that has draped fabric detail around the bust area. It’s a semi-sheer jersey fabric that can be paired with a non-sheer bra, bralette, or camisole to embody the lightness of summer — especially given its delicate color, “ballet pink.”
In the Clutch
One accessory found on everyone from Rihanna to Dua Lipa: the leather (or faux leather) bag that tucks under your arm. It’s as handy during the day as for a casual night out, and goes with nearly any kind of outfit. I particularly love them in creamy hues — so much that I sell them at my Wellesley boutique and its website. Two great examples: the Shell Trunkaroo Bag ($1,450 on gretta.co) and the Ivory Minetta Bag ($297.50).
Jacket Required
Zendaya just took the white blazer to a new level at Wimbledon, where she wore a Ralph Lauren design over a navy-and-white pinstriped button down shirt paired with a navy tie. The look is both a slightly cheeky play on unisex dressing (especially with the feminine hair and makeup she sported) and a literally buttoned-up statement for the event. One terrific version for those who want the look: the Helena Blazer in Stretch Linen Blend ($177.99 on jcrew.com). Its classic lines and below-hip length come in a stretch linen that stays cool and keeps every outfit it covers looking well defined.
Purple Reign
Also at Wimbledon, Kate Middleton stood out among all of the royals’ many floral looks with a gorgeous Safiyaa dress in purple that wowed the crowds. The Princess of Wales chose the custom-made version of the brand’s Cecilia Lilac Midi Dress. It was simple, flattering, and beautiful. It’s an easy-to-embrace look thanks to its versatility and practicality. Unfortunately the design it’s based on is currently sold out, but plenty of similar options are out there — like the Surplice Jersey Dress ($145 on zappos.com) by Lauren by Ralph Lauren.
Shine On
For evenings out, long skirts with plenty of sparkle have found a new following for summer, thanks to the iconic images of Vice President Kamala Harris wearing a long black sequin Valentino skirt at the White House state dinner for the prime minister of Japan. Don your own (slightly) less fancy version with the Sequin Maxi Skirt ($90 on nordstrom.com) by Grey Lab. The sequin-covered and lined maxi skirt skims the body and sports a back slit that reveals just enough leg to make it an easy choice for hitting the town.
