Editorial: Biden enablers betrayed voters

Welcome to the Cliffs Notes of campaigns.

President Joe Biden’s stubbornness — mixed with a dose of hubris and a frighteningly loose grip on reality — has forced his own party into an Electoral College sprint that only hurts voters.

If Biden had stuck to the script and declared he was a one-term president, the country would have been able to vet Democrats vying for the top job long ago, and our allies and enemies would have understood the playbook. Now, we have chaos.

This mess is all on Biden and his circle of enablers.

CNN’s Van Jones can cry all he wants over the news of Biden bowing out, but that doesn’t help anyone pay for groceries at the supermarket. Jen Psaki can continue to stumble on MSNBC, but her job is secure. Being an apologist for a flawed president has its rewards.

And that’s what stinks about this whole affair. True, Biden was exposed at last month’s debate. But the reporting that followed, and even his own admission that he needs breaks during the day, is unacceptable. Voters have a right to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of candidates. Biden robbed America of that.

Vice President Kamala Harris will win over rivals. It’s a simple political calculation. Biden waited so long that Democrats will look frantic if they don’t line up behind her. But is she the best option? It’s all too late for that. She better choose an excellent VP because her performance in the one debate still on the calendar — Sept. 10 on ABC — may be her one and only opportunity to convince voters her years as Biden’s second were not wasted.

The Herald reported late last week that Biden was pulling out of the 2024 campaign. The heat on him was just too intense. His deteriorating mental and physical capabilities were a glaring liability. He had to be pushed out.

This this isn’t synonymous to taking the keys away from elderly loved ones. That analogy is soft-pedaling the point. This is about political leadership in harsh times. The Democrats were cowards and now Nov. 5 is closing fast in the rear-view mirror.

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton told the Herald July Fourth about his “grave concerns” Biden couldn’t beat GOP nominee former President Donald Trump. Moulton, a former U.S. Marine, knows about command and control.

Would you go into battle with Biden? Not today. Not yesterday and now Democrats can finally admit not tomorrow.

Robert Hur was right, but Democrats attempted to ruin his reputation instead of accepting the truth of an outsider. Hur, the special counsel appointed to oversee the investigation into Biden’s possession of classified documents, said Biden would come across to a jury as “as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Therefore, no charges. That’s what his report states. It’s posted for all to see.

How, then, can Biden still report to work each day to manage the country?

This is a sad day for America. Not because a sitting president announced he won’t seek reelection, but how the truth didn’t matter to Democrats in the know. Joe Biden’s time is up! It’s a shame no one had the courage to demand this outcome months ago.

Meanwhile, a carton of eggs and a meal out will still hit you hard in the budget because politicians care more about their jobs than yours.
